The clock is ticking.....

Once again, Microsoft is exerting pressure on everyone to upgrade to the latest version (Vista) or be left behind. They plan to stop selling XP at the end of June of this year. Here's the story from InfoWorld.

I don't know when Microsoft plans to stop *supporting* XP. But I'm sure that date won't be far behind.

They should have learned something when they tried to end support of Windows 98 a few years ago. They ended up moving the end-of-support date back a year or two.

Has there been any word on when -- of if -- there will be an XP Service Pack 3 and/or a Vista Service Pack 1?

Supposedly it'll be a while before we get XP SP3...it's part of the strategy to push people onto Vista. Ditto for Vista SP1, because releasing a SP this soon would mean that Microsoft's admitting to releasing a buggy, broken piece of crudware.

I think my next computer's gonna be a Mac of some sort. Or maybe I'll just use Linux exclusively, I don't know.

Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate is already available. My guess is that the final version won't be that long in coming.

Microsoft no more

Well, XP was so unstable on my Gateway laptop, that I replaced it with Ubuntu Studio - which was the best software upgrade I'd ever made.

My daughter was so annoyed with Windows that she got me to install Linux on her laptop, she's running Mandriva.

And I bought a new MacBook just after Christmas.

Basically I'm never running Windows again. I've used it since V3 was new, and it's never run properly. And I don't think it ever will run properly, I don't think that Microsoft as a company is capable of producing software that is worth running.

If anyone asked me what to buy in future, I will recommend anything but Windows.

What ticked me off is I built a new computer 3 weeks ago. When I went to puchase windows, XP and Vista were both $200. ???
