Dude, where's my email?

At about 10am today, I checked my email. I had about a dozen email messages I wanted to save and download to my PC as soon as I got home. The rest were moved to the Trash folder. At around 2pm, I checked again....and everything was gone -- the trash, the inbox, the sent items, and some large items in a folder titled "download later".

I checked my ISP's support page on their website, and lo and behold, there was an announcement about some type of upgrade to the email system (I forgot if it was a server upgrade, software upgrade, or some other upgrade.) What I want to know is.....why didn't I get advance notice of this upgrade in my email? I don't often check the support page, and if I did, will my ISP's staff be diligent and considerate enough to post things there? Or will they post it after-the-fact?

In late November -- the week before Thanksgiving -- my ISP rolled out a new spam filtering system called Barracuda. But I didn't know about it in advance. For about 2-3 days, my inbox had no messages that were flagged as spam, and I was wondering what was going on. It wasn't until they rolled back the installaton of Barracuda and re-installed SpamAssassin did I start to see messages flagged as spam again.

I'm getting really irritated with my ISP right now. (Names will be withheld for now to protect the guilty.) My previous ISP, which was acquired by my current ISP, was very good about contacting its users in advance via mass email about any upcoming upgrades or changes. That became part of my standard for customer service. (The other parts are prompt, courteous service, and no "you're just another stupid user" attitude.) Ever since the acquisition, I felt that their customer service was not up to the standard set by my previous ISP. In fact, one of the principals of the previous ISP now works as a customer support rep for the new ISP, and I've known her since I moved here in '89, so my expectations for great customer service are high.

I rarely call people for support, mosly because I can do most things myself. But when I do call, I'm usually riled up about something that was done or not done. I left their support line a voice mail message as they had alredy closed for the evening. Hopefully, I'll hear from them tomorrow, and hopefully they backed up my email before they did this upgrade. If not, I'll start shopping around for other ISPs.
