Upgrading to Lucid Lynx....

Last week, the lastest version of Ubuntu Linux -- 10.04, aka "Lucid Lynx" -- was released. Like any Linux geek aficionado, I started downloading the distro that evening, knowing that me and all the other Linux lovers would be doing the same thing. (I really should learn how to use torrents for these downloads.)

The next day, I started upgrading orac (my Dell Optiplex GX620 desktop). The first two times, I received "unable to find us.archive.ubuntu.org" messages, which aborted the installation part way through. But the third time was the charm. It completed the install. I later discovered that the minimixe, maximize, and close buttons were moved to the upper left corner of the window, instead of their usual spot in the upper right corner. No biggie -- there's instructions in the built-in help which walked me through running gconf-editor and changing the button_layout setting.

The next step was to upgrade tardis (my Dell Latitude CPx J laptop). It had previously running the last long-term support version: Hardy Heron (8.04). So I put it in the docking station, and ran the upgrade. I ran into a problem when the update manager told me that the flashplugin-nonfree package was broken and needed to be reinstalled. This took a day trying to figure out how to do this. I then found a post in ubuntuforums.org which said that this was a known problem with this upgrade path, and gave me instructions on how to delete the package. Once that was done, I then manually purged old versions of the Linux kernel and obsolete software. I also reinstalled the drivers for my wireless network card.

Two down, one to go. The third install was dawn (my Compaq Presario M2000 laptop). This had been running the most recent version: Karmic Koala (9.10). I cleared off some desk space and let this run overnight. This install went very smoothly.

So, after a few days of using Lucid, I still love Linux. The purple background is a nice change from the earth-tone backgrounds of previous versions. And I'll get used to the minor cosmetic changes from Karmic.

BTW, if anyone wants a copy of the desktop and 32-bit server versions burned to a CD, let me know.
