Marcon (and why I haven't gone in years).....

This past weekend was Marcon, the "Multiple Alternate Realities CONvention" in Columbus, OH. I used to look forward to going to this SF convention. It's big enough that it has something for everyone. But in the past several years, I've felt bored and indifferent about it.

My first Marcon was (I think) in 1990. Or maybe 1991. I may have missed 1990 because Bubastis gave birth to her kittens that weekend.

Once again, FKO is a no-go for me.....

As much as I'd like to go to this filk con -- and I haven't been there since FKO 13 several years ago -- I just can't swing it financially. No passport, no money for a passport, no money for a con, etc. :(

Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever be able to afford to go to cons again and see people I haven't seen in months or years.

I still don't do Millennicon......

This is a repost from five years ago, with some edits. My opinion hasn't changed much since then.

This weekend is Millennicon, a science fiction convention in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Although its goal is to be a literary con (face it, authors are cheaper to bring in than stars), there are often many media fans there as well.

So, if I'm a fan, why am I not there? )

Should I stay [at home] or should I go?

It's Memorial Day weekend, aka Marcon weekend. And I'm debating whether or not I should go up to Columbus for Saturday. In the past few years, I ghosted the con, hanging out in the hallway and seeing folks I knew. I know I can't afford to stay there all weekend, and haven't for years. (And I know firsthand how much of a bottleneck the elevators at the Hyatt can be on Sunday morning.)

With the cost of gas, and a $35 rate for Saturday only, I'm thinking about whether or not I can truly afford to go. I got child and spousal support to pay.

I've also realized a while ago that it doesn't serve me to continue to live out an escapist fantasy, as some SF fans typically do. I want to touch people's lives. And it's probably too late for me to be on a panel this year.

If I don't go, who's gonna miss me?
