Drinking beer and watching Doctor Who......

Two of my favorite activities rolled up into one. I often kid that this is what some Mensans do for fun, along with Strip Trivial Pursuit.

Okay, I didn't have the beer. Not yet. Even though there's a big can of Labatt's Blue sitting in the fridge. (It's St. Patty's Day! I should be drinking a Guinness and not that artificially-colored American 'green beer' crap! (Brilliant!))

Anyway. end of commercial; back to the programme. I watched it. I liked it. After ten minutes, I'm thinking, "This isn't your father's Doctor Who!"

I liked that they preserved the character, the theme music, the intrigue, and the TARDIS police-box exterior and noises. Of course, they blew the FX budget on the first shot. :) Us old-timers can get nostalgic about the cardboard sets and the cheesy FX. "Hey, it was just a kid's show at the time", we'd say. Not any more. This was a lot more realistic and believable, like something I'd see on prime-time TV.

Rose: I like that they brought back the Autons (although they're not called by that name) and the Nestene Consciousness. Should have had Kraftwerk's "Showroom Dummies" as background music.

The End of the World: Did anyone else flash on "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe"? The Dish of the Day was missing. And I don't know how I'm gonna fit that iPod into my pocket. Maybe in the corner of the rec room.

What else I liked: That TARDIS interior. Alien and spacious. The super-tall time rotor and its controls.

What I didn't like: Commercial interruption (I'm not used to it for DW).

I think I'll be back for more next week.

Even though I had watched all of these last year, thanks to the wonders of the Internet, [livejournal.com profile] aiela and I still snuggled up to watch the Sci-Fi debut.

What I hated about the commercials wasn't that they were there, but the fact that no thought or care seemed to be placed into where they went. it was like they had a stopwatch, and ever N minutes, *chop* time for a commercial, no matter if it made sense or not. I'm surprised they didn't cut to a commercial mid-sentence anywhere in there.

Keep watching. This whole season is full of good stuff.

Difficult to respond to a post with replies are not turned on. We use a combination... for mere annoyances, we try redirection and talking to... for potentially dangerous or obnoxious repeat offenses, the body part that is doing the action gets stuck (ONLY WITH OUR HANDS so we KNOW the force applied) with varying degrees of force depending upon severity. For example, a few years ago, daughter was kicking at a mother dog with pups... foot got smacked rather hard. Would rather she hurt her memorably but briefly than have her attacked and injured. Hands are most frequently struck body part as they try to put liquid on electronics (better memorable but brief pain than elecrocution), or (much lighter) as they reach for phone buttons or keyboard in use (begins as light tap and grows slightly firmer each time per session till she gets the idea) and all strikes are accompanied with verbal corrections and explainings. Hope that helps. I would say that repeat offenses involving potentially disease-inducing cat litter would qualify as striking offense in my book. But, as with everything, your milage may vary (or your wife's).

Wait till you get to the David Tennant episodes...:-D A friend of mine got me the videos/dvds from England, so I'm pretty much halfway through the season and the best episodes are "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" (yes, that is the actual title)

The only thing I really miss from the original series is that it's only a 1 parter instead of a 4 parter.
