The tomato experiment.....

Earlier this year, I tried my hand at gardening. I have little room for a garden in my backyard/patio, so I planted a tomato plant in a large bucket. (Yes. I has a bucket. Don't tell the walrus, though. :) ) The plant grew to a nice size, but I only had 3 small tomatoes on it.

What gives? This was a Chef Jeff's Whopper tomato plant! There should have been lots of big tomatoes!

A neighbor who's more into gardening than I am said I should have had a second tomato plant nearby so they could cross-pollinate. Maybe I'll try that next year.

So, I'll consult the folks on LJ. What should I do different next year?

Your neighbor called it. If you remember from your visit, there's a huge pot on the end of the deck. We had four tomato plants in there last year and it was full of tomatoes. Tomatoes need sex and love, too ya know. ;-)

Not forming fruit at all certainly sounds like a pollination problem. The fruit not being as big as it should be may be the plant not being as healthy as it seemed. Check the soil, water supply, and drainage (was there a hole in the bucket?)
