Cravings.......

It seems that whenever the weather is cold and overcast or rainy, I want Chinese food. I don't know why, but I usually do.

This evening was no exception. As I was driving home from Cincinnati this afternoon, I was wanting a nice hot bowl of wonton soup. I stopped at my favorite local Chinese restaurant, Hunan Wok. I ordered the General Tso's chicken combo (which adds fried rice and an eggroll). I forgot to order the soup. But I didn't need it after all. I was pleasantly full at the end of the meal.

Fall is also a time when I'm wanting nabeyaki udon, a Japanese noodle soup. The different type of mushrooms that are added give the soup a nice earthy texture and taste.

Does anyone else out there crave certain foods for different kinds of weather?

It's not weather dependant, but I crave Cuban food ALL THE FRICKEN TIME. And Jewish food. And Mario the Baker garlic rolls and lasagna from Mama Jennie's (both in North Miami). Gods, now I'm homesick.

Weather wise, I'm starting to have an appreciation for Fall harvest fruit and veggies and am looking into deconstructing the typical Thanksgiving foods in new combinations and presentations (fennel, sausage and wild mushroom stuffing, for example).

I like soups and stews with some nice crusty bread on the side. I make a cheesy potato soup with ham that everyone enjoys.

I love split pea soup, but I am the only one who will eat it. sigh. Would love to make some this week (or right after the Election when I have more time) but I would need to get some freezer storage containers - even something you love can get old after a few days. :-)

When the weather turns cold, I start craving Eastern European foods. The change in weather causes cravings, it seems.

I don't really seem to notice much change in what foods I want. It frustrates me that some foods are only available when it's the "season" for them, even though they could be available any time. I don't mean fresh produce that really is seasonal -- I mean things like chili. I love turkey and dressing all the time, not just for "the holidays". It doesn't have to be St. Patrick's day to have corned beef and cabbage.
