I don't begrudge the African Americans the full month of Febuary. After all they were held as slaves for a couple of centuries, and degraded for decades after that. However... As there is still a governmental policy of finacial/eccological, and culteral pillaging of Native lands and sacred places; being given a simple day is a slap in the face IMO.
However I know that the Blacks started off with a simple day originally that was eventually turned into a full though short month.
Natives are owed a full month of their own I think.
They've already had a month of their own. November has historically been American Indian Heritage month. (Here are its origins, from infoplease.com.) But it doesn't get the same level of publicity and media push that African American Month gets.
What would really make me happy is Native American Heritage Day becoming a federal holiday.
