A followup to my previous entry, "I am no longer infected...", which I posted two weeks ago.

Since installing SystemWorks 2002, I received about 6-7 email messages with the Klez virus, all within a week of installing it. In the past week, I haven't received any.

The Kernel32.exe file was infected with the BadTrans.B@MM virus. Symantec's virus info website says that Kernel32 is a bogus file and should be deleted. It was already quarantined, so I deleted it from the quarantine area. Then I rebooted...and the system came back up. Cool!

The next step was something I didn't know about, since I rarely use Internet Explorer. (I only use it when Netscape is hung, or I'm at a site which uses ActiveX or ActiveServer pages. TurboTax 2002 required IE 5.5, which was included, so I installed it. On Netscape 4.79, these pages show up as blank.) It turns out IE 5.5 (and earlier) had a bug/feature/misfeature which allowed malicious code to seep through, and that a service patch was available from Microsoft's web site. If another person on one of the email lists I'm on didn't tell me about it, I wouldn't have known. And so I grabbed both available service packs -- SP1 and SP2 -- for IE 5.5. I installed SP1 first, then when I tried to install SP2, it told me that I had to have already installed an earlier version of SP2 in order to install this updated version. Feh.

BTW, the IE patches (for 5.0 and later) are available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/default.asp
. Do yourself a favor and grab whatever patches you need.

Two closing comments:
1) Until Microsoft gets serious with their software engineering and gets their software right the first time, getting service packs for all of their softwarwe is the way to go, like it or not.
2) Someone else on one of the email lists said "Microsoft published a patch to plug the hole about 6 months before the virus first surfaced. I personally, have little sympathy for anyone who gets infected..." Well, excuse me! I didn't know about the patch, and if the writer was a bit more helpful and compassionate, they'd give me the URL as to where I can get it. The "Ignorance is no excuse" mindset is something I could never understand.

P.S. Still no Netscape 6.2. It doesn't show up on my credit card statement. Since I ordered it first, before ordering Netscape 4.79 in the same session, I guess the request was overwritten
