There are times I think about getting another bicycle, to run short errands to and from the grocery store, the library, and a few local restaurants.

I don't think I've ridden a bicycle since 1982 or 1983, when I started driving cars.

The bicycle I had was a Hercules 3-speed English racer. )

A couple of weeks ago, one of my clients mentioned that he was headed to Niagara Falls to meet up with some friends from Vermont. He said it was an ideal halfway point. Since that's my old stomping grounds, I offered to send him a lit of restaurants, aerospace sites, byways, and attractions.

Here's the list. )
I’m sure I’m missing a few sites; I’ll add them in a future release.

This past weekend, I took a trip up to Buffalo NY to visit my mother and a few friends and relatives.

Fri 4/15: Took care of some last-minute errands. Left Dayton at around 10:30. Weather was nice; the roads were dry and clear. Arrived at the Olive Garden in Amherst NY a little after 6:30pm. Some friends of mine had gathered to celebrate Todd's birthday. Reconnected with Matt, Rhonda, and Steve, whom I haven't seen or heard from in years.

Sat 4/16: It rained all day. Did a little shopping. Had lunch with Sal. Had dinner and coffee with Liz and Louis. Our initial venue was Santora's, but it was packed, as the Sabres/Flyers game was on. Went around the corner to Jack's Pub. Then went to Coffee Culture.

Sun 4/17: It snowed. Had breakfast with Rich. My cousins Steve and Carol came over and visited for about an hour. Then visited my aunt Angie, with whom I had dinner.

Mon 4/18: Left Buffalo around 10:30. Stopped at the Lodi Station factory outlet mall and picked up a couple of pairs of jeans. Met up with [livejournal.com profile] athenawindsong at her place for about an hour. Then had dinner at Outback. Arrived home around 8:45.

I typically don't announce that I'm out of town until I come back home. That said, here's a summary of my last trip to Buffalo.

Wed 11/24: Worked for a couple hours. Had lunch at Skyline Chili with the regular crowd (co-workers and friends). Packed for the trip. Got stuck in Columbus rush-hour traffic. It was bumper-to-bumper from I-270 & Sawmill Rd. to I-71 and US 36. I lost about two hours in that traffic jam. Stopped for dinner in Mansfield, OH. Stopped for a late-night bite and to catch up on email at the rest stop in Angola, NY. Arrived at home around 1:30am.

Thu 11/25: A lazy day, as Thanksgiving Days usually are. Watched part of the Macy's parade and a dog show that was on TV. Went food shopping at Tops. Big Lots was open, so I stopped in. Picked up a Plantronics Bluetooth earpiece for $12. Spent the afternoon entering fuel purchase data intp my MPG spreadsheet, and configuring the Bluetooth earpiece to use with my smartphone. Had a nice Thanksgiving dinner, which I picked up at Denny's the previous evening. Called a few friends to try to schedule visits for the next couple days.

Fri 11/26: Another lazy day. Slept in and avoided the shopping malls. Had lunch with good friends Louis and Liz -- first at Ted's, then migrating to Coffee Culture. Had dinner at home. Spent the evening at home; it was too cold and dark to go out.

Sat 11/27: Did some more shopping for Mom. Stopped in at Big Lots to try to get a Polaroid 4Gb MP3 player with touch screen, but they were sold out. Had lunch at Santora's with Howard, who was in from Boston. Had dinner and good conversation with Bill and Darleen.

Sun 11/28: Had breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] thepolishviking. Left for Dayton. Was cloudy and overcast until I reached Fredonia, NY. Dropped off some laptop goodies for [livejournal.com profile] dagonell and [livejournal.com profile] cigfran_cg. Had a good drive until I passed Mansfield, OH. Two rear-end collisions slowed things down between Mansfield and Columbus. Dropped off a tea sampler for [livejournal.com profile] maedbh7. Had dinner at China Cottage.

Once again, I made a week-long trip to visit my mom in Buffalo, NY. I typically don't publicize these trips in advance for security reasons.

I'm also going to skip mentioning the numerous shopping trips I made for Mom and myself. I'm sure Tops and Walgreens were happy to receive our business.

The details, in a nutshell. )

I pulled in to my condo's parking lot at 12:30pm. I can now tell the tale of my recent adventures in Indianapolis, Chicago, and Buffalo. Part 1 is here.

Continuing where we left off... )

Am spending Easter weekend -- and a few extra days -- in Buffalo, visiting my mom. She's doing OK. It's a good thing I'm here this week. D from Assisting Angels Senior Care has a cold and isn't able to come over for the time being. So I'm being the "good son" and being a companion and chauffeur to her.

I intentionally left the laptop at home. I'm using the Amherst Library's computers to stay caught up on my email and job postings.

To recap the trip so far.... )

Back when I lived in Buffalo, I wasn't as much as a bibliophile as I am now. I mostly frequented the comic book stores: Queen City Book Store and Fantasy World. There were no chain bookstores in town. Apparently personal libraries were for the wealthy or well-to-do at the time.

Here are the stores I remember. )

.....has to be the one that Buffalo's WKBW-TV used for their "Eyewitness News" program from the 1970s up until a few years ago. It's dramatic, attention-grabbing, and recognizable. Just the qualities a TV theme must have for the few seconds it's played.

Some searching on Google yielded some trivia. )

What TV news themes do you remember? What city and station are they from?
