That's my favorite term for this kind of penalty--the Poverty Tax. It is just plain hard to get out from under debt. My ex and I were lucky in that we were able claw our way out of a $40,000 hole pretty muchby obsessing on becoming cheapskates for years. Being underemployed makes it even more difficult--we were able to get expenses under income, but that doesn't work for everyone. Best of luck to you.
