I've been wondering for some time how the most nutball flavor of Southern Baptism became the public face of Christianity. It's completely at-odds with the vast majority of people I've known over the course of my life who've described themselves as Christian. Some of them have even been born-again Baptists themselves.
Old joke: The problem with Southern Baptists is that they weren't held under water long enough. :)
I have a number of theories as to how this happened. These include Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, their flocks, Ralph Reed, the Christian Coalition, Fox News, and overall complacency of the moderates. And then you've got the shrill Jeremiahs -- Fred Phelps, Randall Terry, Operation Save America. And of course, I can't forget the efforts of Rich DeVos, Jay Van Andel, the company they founded, Dexter Yager, and Bill Britt.
A good friend (and my spiritual mentor) sent me a link to The Yurica Report website. Specifically, the one whch mentions the Dominionists.
