Well, I'm back......
Oct. 27th, 2003 09:44 pm.....from Ohio Valley Filk Fest (OVFF) in Columbus, OH.
For those of you scratching your head and wondering "What is this thing called filk?", filk is the subgroup of science fiction fans who are also amateur to semi-professional musicians, or have an appreciation for them. Filkers are intelligent, witty, creative, and fun to be around. (At least I think so, which is why I go to filk conventions like OVFF.)
We -- my family and I -- decided to skip Friday night, thus cutting our hotel bill in half by staying only one night. We arrived on Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm. We didn't spend a lot of time attending or participating in the convention programming -- workshops, concerts, and "one-shots". Instead, we spent the entire weekend socializing with our convention friends whom we haven't seen since the last filk convention we were at. Besides catching up on each other's lives, we spent our time chasing after our daughter, who just learned to walk a few weeks ago. In short, we treated OVFF like a relaxacon, and that worked well for us.
The dozen Killer Brownies(tm) we brought for the con suite went rather quickly. And the two items I brought for the Interfilk auction went home with happy people.
I wore my Hell's Mensans T-shirt on Sunday. Hell's M's -- to use its official name -- is to Mensa as the Dorsai is to SF fandom. The Hell's M's credo is (and I borrowed it from their web site): "A Hell's M's party is any party, large or small, where everyone participating in or affected by the party has good memories the day after." The same can be said about OVFF.
We followed Supertramp's advice and took the long way home -- up US 33 to Wapakoneta (Neil Armstrong's home town) and south on I-75 back to Dayton. But first, we found this bizarre cornfield about a mile south of the hotel. More on this in a later entry.
