Pretty blue flames.....
Dec. 10th, 2006 05:55 amI like to drive by the AK Steel plant in Middletown at night. I can see the flames on top of the smokestacks from the blast furnaces. The tallest stack has an orange flame that can be seen for miles (or at least from I-75). There is a shorter stack that has a blue flame, that is visible from University Blvd., which borders the plant.
Last night, the blue flame sparked a memory from childhood. When I was younger, I would go down to the basement of my parents' house and watch the little blue flames at the bottom of the furnace. (They have hot-water heat, heated by gas.) The furnace has since been replaced (twice).
Nowadays, people are fascinated by a different blue flame: television.
Personally, I'd rather be watching (and feeling the warmth of) a log in the fireplace right about now.
