It's far too easy for me to focus on -- and worry about -- my liabilities when I see them on a balance sheet. There are physical (and fiscal) assets -- home, cars, retirement money, collections and collectable items. And then there are non-fiscal assets like having a roof over my head, clothes on my bank, food on the table, and reasonably good health.

Some people don't even have this. I don't know how they go on from day to day, living in constant despair and desparation. But I think I'm learning from firsthand experience the past few weeks.

Perhaps this is the wake-up call, or the kick in my complacency that I needed to change my ways, that I should not take these things for granted.
