I don't know why, but the 12-pack of Diet Vernors I bought last Thanksgiving in Buffalo seems to taste a little off. First off, it doesn't have the bite that Vernors usually has; it tastes a lot more smooth. Or maybe because the soda's going flat. Second -- and I found this out the hard way -- diet drinks tend to lose their sweetness after several months as the aspartame breaks down. (That's one reason why I call aspartame evil.)

I found out last week that the local Kroger stocks Vernors in cans, so I don't have to make a special trip back home to get it and bring it back here. I'll have to do that with Weber's horseradish mustard, though.

Does anyone else out there on my flist drink Vernors?

Not to be taken internally

When I was in grad school at Eastern Mich. Univ., coming back to the grad housing dorm on the hottest day of the year, the water was out due to some plumbing disaster. So I went to the vending machine. All that was left was vernors. I took a sip. I cannot understand why anyone would call that stuff a drink. I went over to the dry drinking fountain, an poured the toxic, but wonderfully refrigerated fluid over my arms to cool myself off.

That is the best use I can see for the stuff.

I used to drink Vernor's on occasion back in the 80's, but not so much these days. Definitely prefer the regular to diet. I think I've had it once this year.

I'm a Canada Dry girl. I tried Vernors and all it did for me was serious burp-age. The taste was okay, though, but not enough to keep me interested.

Growing up in Detroit... Vernors was the drink to drink. I'm not a fan of soda these day's and don't drink the stuff... but as a teen and young adult... Vernors was my drink of choice. Loved the stuff!!!

I've had a can or two over the years and honestly don't like the stuff, the only thing worse in my oppinion is anything in the Fago line of sodas. Although cream sodas are a lot like Verners in taste and toxicallity.

Nope. Not a Vernor's drinker, but (unlike some) it's not because of it's strong gingeriness. That part I like. I just find it too sweet. I wonder if the diet is less sweet? I might like it better. I like ginger beers. Reeds is good, and generally available around here. Used to get a brand with a name like "Jamaica Old Tyme" or some such. That was *very* strongly gingered, but barely sweet. Referred to it as scouring powder for the throat. Great stuff to clear the pipes before singing.

In Chico, a couple opened a Root Beer store. But they don't just stock root beers. They also stock other flavored soft drinks including ginger beer. You can as for anything that they have out on their shelves and they will serve you the chilled version. And some of them are even diet!

Next time I go up there I'm going to look for Reeds of Jamaica Old Tyme.

Old Tyme seems to have gone out of existence. Haven't seen it in years, and just googled it. Someone else apparently went looking for it a couple weeks ago and found out that someone was auctioning a few bottles at $18 per. Yikes!

Reed's is still around though. They make both ginger ale and ginger beer. (The beer is also known as "extra brew"). reedsinc.com includes a store locator to help find a place near you that carries their brews.
