Memories of Dawn (amadearose32)....
Nov. 3rd, 2019 09:43 pmOne of my close friends, Dawn Rose Amadea, passed away this past Thursday, October 31, after years of health issues.
How did Dawn and I first meet? We met through the Dayton Area Pagan Network in/around 2005. She was one of the people -- or close to the people -- who organized the Dayton Pagan Pride Day back then.
She soon joined a Middle Eastern music band, Snakes Rising, which played for a few Middle Eastern dance troupes and at haflas (dance parties). Two years later, I joined her on the band's "Red Tour" in 2007, playing at gigs in Muncie IN, Dayton OH, Cincinnati OH, and Louisville KY.
She was the one who invited me to join her at the Starwood Festival in 2007. This was when the festival was held at the Brushwood Folklore Center in Sherman, NY.
She was a music teacher by trade, specializing in flute. She had been teaching at a school in Cincinnati. Once she divorced her first husband, she then took a teaching job in Columbus and moved there. A few years later, she decided to move to North Carolina and teach music for Wake Forest University. Unfortunately, that job never panned out. But she had a radio show on one of the low-power stations there. Two of the episodes were about the "Synthesizer Revolution", and gave me credit for many of the selections for the songs she played.
It was in North Carolina where she met her second husband, John Menchen. They moved back to Columbus, where she had another teaching gig. But her health started giving out.
They then moved to Springboro to live with her parents, who had moved up from Miami, so that they could be close to Dawn.
I returned to the Starwood Festival from 2014-16. By then, it had moved to the Wisteria Campground near Pomeroy, OH, and I could only spend weekends there due to work schedules, available vacation time, and spending money.
On the morning of April 3, 2015, her mother passed away. That's when her life took a turn for the worse. Her father went to live with one of Dawn's half-sisters, and Dawn and John moved to Cincinnati.
In June of 2018, Dawn and I went to Chicago to see one of her favorite bands: Depeche Mode. She had a ticket, but I didn't. So I chilled out at the hotel room while she attended the concert. On the trip, we stopped at some fine restaurants, including Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis and Giordano's Pizza in Rosemont.
She was also a cat lover. She had a Maine Coon named Tigger, who passed away a few years ago. John had a black shorthair cat named Abby, also called "Chicken" because the cat would hop onto people and stand on them, like a pet chicken he had a few years ago. They adopted two other tabbies: Coco and Louie.
She will definitely be missed.
