Still scruffy lookin'.....

Since I've not shaved in the past few days, I've been contemplating whether or not to let it grow into a beard. I tried it a couple of times before. The first time ('92-93), it never filled in, but kept on growing. I would have looked like one of the guys in ZZ Top if I didn't maintain it. The second time ('94-95?), I tried the goatee. Same thing. Would it be different this time? And would The Wife let me keep it?

I also wonder whether or not I should let my hair grow long. It would drive my dad nuts for me to have a wild mane. But would this work against me on interviews, where the interviewers expect people who look business-like, conservative, clean-shaven, well groomed, and short hair -- even if I'm applying for an IT job? I've had the same hairstyle for years, if it could be called a style. In high school I tried parting it down the middle. That didn't last long.

Or is all this just another idle dream? A 'Grizzly Adams' (or 'Grisly Addams') fantasy?

My personal rule is that when looking for work, I must look neat and professional. That can mean a beard, but it must be kept short; I typically keep my cheeks shaved and a clean line at the bottom of it, too. Hair short for interviews. Once I find work, I can assess whether I can afford to grow my hair. But then, I work in a conservative industry (investment banking support). It might be different if I knew that the shop I was applying at was, to use some of my agents' epithet "a hippie joint" (oh, how I wish!).
