A Day In The Life, In My Life.......
Jan. 4th, 2005 12:23 amGot some bad news from The Wife today. She has to make up the time spent on the Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve holidays, and the storm day, when the office was closed, because she didn't have enough vacation time to cover for these days. Is it common for workplaces to NOT give paid holidays? This is a major suck. Now I'm stuck carting The Girl to and from daycare for three days this week while she goes in early and stays late to make up for the lost time.
Another major suck is that she had a payroll deduction to cover her so-called Christmas bonus -- a $20 gift certificate to Meijer -- and more to cover the card's sales tax.
And because the workplace couldn't come to terms with a major health provider (one we were with), we were automatically rolled over to another provider.
Meanwhile, I've heard the upper managment got themselves some nice tidy little bonuses. Grr. Where's the justice?

It's been a sucky day, weather-wise. Cool (50 degrees F) and rainy. This is winter! I don't want rain in January! I want snow!
Got a holiday card from an old acquaintance today. I knew Linda from one of the local computer clubs. Several years ago, her family moved down to Florida. I sent her a card this year. She sent me a card in reply....and included religious tracts! She's done that in the past, and I just find it tacky and annoying. How can I tactfully tell her to stop sending me tracts with her cards? Do I send the tracts back to her? Or do I just throw them out?
Found a great 3-CD compilation of '80s music in the library today. It's called "Living In Oblivion" and has a lot of the obscure and minor hits I remember from back then. This even has stuff they won't touch on the '80s or classic rock stations.

Date: 2005-01-04 05:38 am (UTC)It's becoming common for employers to roll together all of an employee's paid time off, including holidays, vacation, personal days and sick days, into a lump. AFAIK, this serves the dual purpose of simplifying accounting and absolving employers of accusations of religious discrimination (i.e., if someone wants to take off for Tisha B'Av and has the time and puts in for it in time, per procedure, they can take it with the same ease as someone who want to go to Worldcon or to take off for Ash Wednesday). What happened to your wife is something that shows the inherent inequity of the system, in that she HAS to reserve time off for days she may or may not wish to take off, if the office is closed.
How can I tactfully tell her to stop sending me tracts with her cards?
I'm not sure it's tactful, but I'd tell her that the tracts are not only not my belief, but run counter to my beliefs -- please don't. It shouldn't be too difficult toimply that she has no interest in a continuing friendship, should more tracts arrive.
Or, you could send them back, MSTied. That's definitely not tactful, but it should get the message across. And it'll be lots of fun to do :-)

"It's hard for me to get angry at people who spend their free time trying to save my soul. They're not gonna do it, but I think it's nice that they care enough about other people to try."

Date: 2005-01-04 08:23 pm (UTC)If I don't say "no tracts please", it's an open invitation for her to keep sending them to me, which I view as both a waste of resources and harrassment. You've seen the trash mountains -- why should I contribute to their growing size? Plus it enables her to walk all over me because I'm not sticking up for what I want.
It's as if I started sending you spam, and kept sending spam to you. Although with spam, the electrons get recycled.
Do you get it now?

Date: 2005-01-04 04:13 pm (UTC)This is what really throws me. They actually took her money and bought what they wanted for her from it? How weird!
I remember my season working at the IRS. They were very generous with sick time and vacation time considering the seasonal status. The only problem was they never let you take the time cuz they were always so busy! I did get the money for them when I left though.
By the way have you thought about working for them? They may still be hiring for this year. It's a long commute though - Covington, KY. I also found it a pretty stressful job in many ways and didn't want to go back but ymmv.
