Another mystery solved!
Feb. 15th, 2005 11:11 pmLast September, I mentioned a snippet of a song I heard, but couldn't identify. To recap:
Yesterday, I finally confirmed my hunch. The local library had a copy of Living In Oblivion: The 80s Greatest Hits vol. 2, which, according to the info in the catalog, had a song by Haircut One Hundred on it. After weeks of waiting for it, it was finally in the rack! Needless to say, the CD went home with me.
Sure enough, the song was indeed Haircut One Hundred's "Love Plus One". But the song has nothing to do with rain, as I originally thought. They're singing "(and I call) Ring (ring) Ring (ring) Ring (ring) Ring (ring)....Love, Love plus one" in the chorus. (And I love the scratch rhythm guitar on the song too.)
Done in by another mondegreen.
Now I can spend my time worrying about other inane things, like how hotels get their towels so fluffy and thirsty, and the significance of 10/6 on the tag in the Mad Hatter's hat.
[Updated 23:18] Google comes through again. Found this site with a John Tenniel illustration of the tea party. The tag on the hat says "In this style 10/6", which probably indicated its price -- 10 shillings, 6 pence.
As Minnie Pearl would say, "How-DEE!"
Some enterprising folks have taken 10/6 to be a date on which to celebrate Mad Hatter's Day -- October 6. (In England, it's on June 10th.)
And why are hatters mad? Because of all the mercury involved in the hatmaking process. Or so I've been told.
Song 3) This song is very 80s. The chorus has the word "Rain" sung alternatively in the left and right speakers. I think it had the phrase "Rain down on me". (No, it's not by the Who.) And then after the chorus is a marimba/xylophone riff that goes A-C-E-G, A-C-E-G, A-C-E-G-A-G. I thought it was by Haircut One Hundred, but I'm not sure. I last heard it waiting for my pizza at Pizzeria Uno.
