In somewhat chronological order.....
Camping ('75): The boys and leaders of my Boy Scout troop. Special mention to Doc Hubbard, who stayed active as an adult leader long after his son went through the program and went to VMI, and also introduced me to the joys of Twinings Irish Breakfast tea and Algonquin Provincial Park.
Gaming, D&D, and The Lord of the Rings ('77): Sisters Sharon and Karen Kensek, whom I've written about earlier. (I think Karen also mentioned something about Mensa at one point.)
Doctor Who and Science Fiction fandom ('84):Tom Pellitieri, whom I first met through the computer science department at school. My introduction to the Galaxy Club was in June of 1984, a few weeks after we saw "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" together.
SCA ('85): Tom Pellitieri and
dagonell. Dagonell was also a member of the Galaxy Club. Several of us became active in the local SCA chapter, the Rhydderich Hael.
[Added 3/12 00:38] Disability Awareness ('88): Todd Vaarwerk and Shelly Bamrick. I'd known Shelly for a few years; she was married to -- and later divorced -- one of my fraternity brothers. Shelly got around with the help of a seeing-eye dog; Todd got around on either a wheelchair or forearm crutches. Both Todd and Shelly had zany senses of humor, which I got to experience and share when I hung out with them in the Independents office at UB. Even though we've drifted apart a little due to distance and busy schedules, we're still in email contact with each other.
Filk ('90): Renee Alper. Tom P. had mentioned filk, but I didn't actively participate in filking until I met Renee at Millennicon -11. She was the host of a bi-monthly house filk, called "Filkaholics Anonymous". I was a regular attendee until the summer of '96.
Mensa ('92): Christine Bartlett (nee Karen Kuhlman). I first met Christine at work. She was the LocSec (local secretary, or leader) of the local Mensa chapter. I took the Mensa test in '87, qualified, but didn't join until Karen introduced me to the other folks in the local group, and I attended my first RG (Regional Gathering).
Wicca and Paganism ('93): Amy "Zon" Mundhenk and
mariasmom. I had heard a little bit about "the craft" and was scared about it, until Zon took me to Anything Under the Moon, a pagan bookstore in town, and had me borrow an introductory videotape. (I first met Zon at Filkaholics.) A few years later, after
mariasmom and I started dating, she initiated me into her circle.
The music of Christine Lavin ('94):
ethansmom. On a weekend trip to visit her and now-husband Dan, we were driving east on I-495 to go to a petting zoo. During the drive, she popped in a tape into the car's cassette player, saying "You've GOT to hear this!" It was a compilation of several of her favorite Lavin songs.
Mens' work ('94): Skinner.

He, along with two other men from the Dayton Mens' Council, had a talk at one of the DAMNations RGs about mens' work. Three years later, I participated in the New Warrior Training Adventure.
Sushi ('97): Bob Pollick, whom I also met through the Mensa chapter. I was working for him, and he took me to a sushi bar for lunch. The waitress kidded him about "only old Japanese men mix their wasabi and soy sauce", and he responded, "It turns out that an old Japanese man taught me how to do this."
The people in filk fandom ('99) and LiveJournal ('02):
ohiblather and
maedbh7. After dropping out of Filkaholics, I pretty much remained solitary in the filk community. I'd go to filk cons, but there wasn't a lot of friendship-bonding going on for me. (I don't remember inviting any filkers to my wedding.) Then I started reading Blatherings, and became a regular contributor to Blatherchat. Then, after
gleepy gave me an invite code to LJ, I started meeting other filkers here.
maedbh7, who was already very socially connected with the filk group in Columbus, re-introduced me to that crowd, as well as some of the filkers from other areas. Too bad I didn't get to know her earlier.
Looking back, it's almost like a set of stepping stones. I'm introduced to a person, who introduces me to another person, and so on.
The web of life connects each of us to the other.
