Hey everyone! Give it up for
mariasmom, also known as my wife Rebecca, who's celebrating her birthday today!
Some of you already know the story of how we met, courted, moved in together, and got married. If not, here's the story in a nutshell. (I'll admit that Rebecca tells teh story better than I do.)
It was in the fall of1992. I was at the Ohio Renaissance Festival. I recognized and said hello to Linda, a fan dealer whom I recognized from Millennicon, Marcon, and OVFF. Rebecca happened to be with her. Well, I thought Rebecca was cute, so I struck up a conversation with her. We talked for about an hour, exchanged contact info, and parted ways. (Sidenote: Where we first met is between the roadway near teh Knight's Encampment and the pirate ship. There is a tree -- not planted by either of us -- that approximately marks the spot.)
We saw each other again at Visions '92 in Chicago. I went up to her room, where we chatted some more. Linda was her roommate, and if she had left the room, things would have gotten... um.... interesting..... between Rebecca and I. (So much for Con Lust. :-( )
And so we repeated the pattern for the next three years -- see each other at cons, chat for a while, exchange contact info, and not follow up with each other.
At Marcon '96, that all changed. Rebecca was with her friends Carol and Janet. Janet saw me and took a liking to me on the spot. She told Rebecca, "He's cute!", to which Rebecca responded, "Back off, he's mine! He's the one who I've been telling you about!" We started our usual routine. But this time, Rebecca saw that I was unattached, and said, "I like you. I think you like me. Wanna date?" I said, "Uh.... sure.".
That night, we (Rebecca, Janet, and I) went to Schmidt's Sausage Haus in German Village with some members of Starward Bound, and endured the 2-hour wait to get in.
Two weeks later, there was a Toastmasters district conference in Columbus. I called Rebecca and we had our first date that night -- dinner at the Applebee's on Olentangy River Rd. And then we went to her townhouse apartment, to meet her two cats, Oreo and Lady. Oreo didn't take a liking to me right away, but soon warmed up to me. I think I broke the ice by getting him a bag of cat treats, and feeding them to him.
The following weekend, she came to Dayton to spend time with me. Dinner was at the Olive Garden. Then we adjourned to my townhouse apartment...and soon, upstairs.
:-D
I knew we were right for each other when I was staying over at her apartment in Columbus one weekend. One morning, I asked her, "How many lumps would you like?", referencing the number of sugar lumps to be added to her coffee. Her response was, "Oh, three or four", in a Pete the Puma voice.
Since we didn't live in the same city -- her in Columbus, my in Dayton -- we alternated between Columbus and Dayton when we spent out weekends together. We hated parting on Sunday night, and knowing that stretch of I-70 quite well.
Things changed again in the spring of '98, when I bought a condo and she moved in to live with me. She quite her job in Columbus after three weeks of commiting from Dayton. She soon found a job at a local medical care facility, doing billing.
That fall, I proposed to her, both at the Ren festival park, and on the west bank of Caesar's Creek Lake. She accepted. We got married in August of '99. Three years later, Maria was born.
Rebecca, if you're reading this, you've made such a wonderful change in my life. I can't imagine my life without you. I love you! Happy birthday!
