I voted today / Grindergirl!
Nov. 5th, 2002 09:58 pmOk, I did my duty as a United States citizen and voted today, after work. Unfortunately, I didn't get to research the candidates as deeply as I would have liked. The "big" offices were easy. I happen to personally know the independent candidate for governor of Ohio, John Eastman, so he got my vote. (And his name was at the top of the ballot! Bonus!) For some of the candidates for different judges, I had to mentally flip a coin. At least we didn't have to vote for our coroner this year. I'm not sure my candidate(s) will win, but at least I can say I cast my ballot.
Anyway....Like her parents, Maria is a nightowl. And so we watch late-night TV. Rebecca (my wife) is a fan of David Letterman, so we watch him instead of Jay Leno. One of the regular segments is "Will It Float?", when they bring out a household object, a large tank of water, and two models place the object in the tank to see if it will float or sink. Typical Letterman schtick, I know, but we love it.
Sometimes, there is a third person in the back of the stage -- a young woman with a handheld grinding wheel and a metallic outfit. She holds the grinding wheel close to her as she walks back and forth along the back of the stage, and lets the sparks fly.

I'm intrigued. Who is this mysterious, gorgeous woman and why is she doing this? So I did a Google search on "grinder girl", and found the Grindergirl home page. This woman is a Russian-born performance artist named Kiva Kahl, and she has done a number of stage acts. She's been doing her Grindergirl act sporatically on the Letterman show since June. I think she's also doing her act at a theater in New York City, with a bunch of similarly-talented folks.
Now I'm hooked, wondering when we're gonna get to see her (and her act) again. Her web site bills her as a superheroine. Team her up with Captain Liberty and I'm there, dude!
