Only in Ohio.....

Give it up for new LJ'er
folkmew! And a belated welcome to
tarkrai, who I know in the real-time world, but didn't know he had a LiveJournal until very recently.
Quick recap....Last month, we had lots of snow -- the likes of which I haven't seen since I moved away from Buffalo. (No, I didn't move to escape the snow; I moved becasue there were no jobs for me there.) In the weekend around Valentine's Day (Feb. 15-16), we had just over a foot of snow. The contractor that plows my condo's road and parking lot didn't make it here until the afternoon. I was snowed in on Monday; I couldn't back my car out of its parking spot. So I just fell backward and made a snow angel that morning, and called in "snowed in" that day. Snow brings out the kid in me. Now most of the snow has melted, and it looks like we'll finally move in to Spring. And yes, I've had enough snow for this year.
In Kent, a woman there made a snow woman soon after last month's storm, and some blue-nosed idiot complained because the snow woman was anatomically correct. In other words, she had breasts! Here's a link to the story in the Akron Beacon-Journal.
And then there's Cincinnati's Citizens for Community Values, a group of outspoken puritanical blue-noses who are threatening to sue hotels or make life miserable for them if they don't yank out their adult pay-per-view channels. So far, I believe two hotels have caved in. This is the same group that spearheaded the vote for Article XII in Cincinnati which prevents the City Council from giving special protection to people based on sexual orientation, and they insist that sexual orientation is a behavior. Give me a break! Another reason to boycott this town. [JJP 3/15: The other reason is the poor way the local police have treated people of color.]
Meanwhile, in Oxford, a Miami University student gets charged with a misdemeanor after forging an email message stating that there would be no classes on Thursday, March 6. This is also Green Beer Day in the college town; the bars serve green beer on the first Thursday because the school is on spring break when the 17th rolls around.
[JJP 3/15: And in Columbus, the Ohio State Legisture formally ratifies the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. (That's the one about "due process".) Apparently Ohio initially ratified it, but later withdrew their vote, waaay back when in the 1850s or thereabouts. A group of law students at the University of Cincinnati uncovered this gap in our state history, and the legislature has now corrected that omission through the formality of ratifying it.]
Maybe this is why we love our college basketball teams so much. It's a temporary escape from the insanity we call "reality". Plus we're tired of seeing ads for Roundup and car dealers on the local news. The local favorites: University of Dayton (UD) Flyers. University of Cincinnati (UC) Bearcats. Xavier Musketeers. University of Kentucky (UK) Wildcats. (Oh yeah -- the Wildcats had to alter their team logo a few years ago because the tongue on the original logo was "too phallic." Maybe CCV was behind that too.) Indiana University (IU) Hoosiers. Ohio State University (OSU) is not a basketball school -- they have a team, but they've never been contenders.
This is conference playoff week. Whoever wins these tournaments goes on to "The Dance" or "The Brackets" -- the NCAA Men's Basketball Playoffs, which starts early next week. 64 teams go in.....63 games; single-elimination.....only 1 comes out the winner. Who will it be this year? Stay tuned....
