I think I'm almost finally rid of the computer problems that have plagued me the past few months. A reinstall of Windows 98 SE and Office 97 seemed to do the trick. I'll need to get back on my weekly regimen of virus scanning, Scandisk'ing and Defrag'ing. I may need to reinstall Norton SystemWorks and Adobe Acrobat, though.

Last night, I finally upgraded my email software -- Eudora -- from 3.0.6 to 5.2.1. I've been putting off the upgrade for a while. The old version worked fine for me; why should I upgrade? I couldn't send out rich-text-format messages, but that was OK; plain-text was good enough anyway. But I did get the occasional HTML message that didn't reset the centering at the end of the message. If that was part of a digest, the rest of the message was centered. And the index files to mail folders would occasionally get scrambled (mostly because of an x-html tag with no following newline), but I had a Perl script to fix them.

So far, it's working good. I was able to install the new version over the old version. I'm glad Qualcomm added something to the code which enables email to be stored in a separate directory (and drive) than the program...which is how it should be. I had to manually move a few files to the new directory, like my address book, my filter file, and my signature files. I can live with the pop-up ads -- they're in the bottom left corner of the screen. It's as unobtrusive as the ads you see at sporting events that change every 10 minutes, either on the scoreboard or next to it.

There will be a few growing pains, but I should be able to navigate them with little or no problem. Now if I can archive messages and move attached files so I can create a CD archive of my email, I'll be all set!

Speaking of software......I'm looking for photo/image management software that will enable me to set up a batch job to resize a group of images (e.g. create thumbnail images of digital photographs (100 x 75 x72 dpi) or create print-quality images (4" x 6" x 300 dpi)), and also create HTML "index" pages featuring the thumbnails and links to the pictues. I can do this by hand, but it takes so long to do and get the results I want.

While Paint Shop Pro 7 is great for image manipulation, it doesn't have the batch processing I'm looking for. I've tried Ulead Photo-Impact 5 (which I got real cheap), but it seems to crap out on me every time I use it. Time for a re-install. One of the local photo shops recommendes ACD-See.

Any suggestions for other photo management software I might want to try or buy?
