Box 76....

Today I went through a box of mail, 1 1/2 box of files, and "box 76" -- a computer paper box filled with printouts from rec.arts.startrek from 1987. (It was the 6th box of printouts from that year, hence the box number.) I reduced the files by half, the mail box by a lot, and after thumbing through the printouts, all of box 76 went to a local animal shelter, which can use them (and newspapers) to line cages.

I was a voracious netnews (Usenet) reader in college. I think I was so addicted to netnews that my grades suffered. The system admin expressed concern that I was spending so much of their resources on netnews reading. When I got too busy to read news online, I went to the directory where the news was, did a "more * | lpr" to print them out, and didn't look at them. In retrospect, I wish I had saved them to floppy disk or to tape. But floppies were expensive back then, and connection speeds were slow.

I just hope Google Groups has these articles online, if I ever needed or wanted to refer back to them. There was a lot of buzz about Next Gen, since it started that fall. And lots of trivia about the old series. But the posts, like my newspaper and magazine clippings, is something I can no longer afford, time and space wise, to keep or maintain. I'd be spending all my time continually culling the best articles for saving.

Why did I even start such a collection? I was bored and wanted a hobby to help pass the time. Unfortunately, this "hobby" got way out of hand. And other things have since occupied my life.
