Two of my favorite activities rolled up into one. I often kid that this is what some Mensans do for fun, along with Strip Trivial Pursuit.
Okay, I didn't have the beer. Not yet. Even though there's a big can of Labatt's Blue sitting in the fridge. (It's St. Patty's Day! I should be drinking a Guinness and not that artificially-colored American 'green beer' crap! (Brilliant!))
Anyway. end of commercial; back to the programme. I watched it. I liked it. After ten minutes, I'm thinking, "This isn't your father's Doctor Who!"
I liked that they preserved the character, the theme music, the intrigue, and the TARDIS police-box exterior and noises. Of course, they blew the FX budget on the first shot. :) Us old-timers can get nostalgic about the cardboard sets and the cheesy FX. "Hey, it was just a kid's show at the time", we'd say. Not any more. This was a lot more realistic and believable, like something I'd see on prime-time TV.
Rose: I like that they brought back the Autons (although they're not called by that name) and the Nestene Consciousness. Should have had Kraftwerk's "Showroom Dummies" as background music.
The End of the World: Did anyone else flash on "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe"? The Dish of the Day was missing. And I don't know how I'm gonna fit that iPod into my pocket. Maybe in the corner of the rec room.
What else I liked: That TARDIS interior. Alien and spacious. The super-tall time rotor and its controls.
What I didn't like: Commercial interruption (I'm not used to it for DW).
I think I'll be back for more next week.
