One of the things I love about summer nights is the various sounds I hear.

There's the sounds of crickets, and some other critter that lives in trees, going "zeet-zeet-zeet". I don't know what it is; I think it's an insect of some type. I'd love to stand outside with a tape recorder and record nothing but night sounds for 30 minutes. But it would probably be interrupted by other sounds -- cars driving by, people talking, sirens blaring, etc.

Does sound travel further at night? There are lots of faraway sounds I hear only at night. I don't hear them during the day.

Some of the sounds I used to hear on summer nights long ago: The sound of traffic on the I-290, which is about a mile south of my parents' home. The sound of distant trains. And some horn that went off in a long blast at around 9:00pm. I'm guessing it was a ship's horn, since we were a few miles away from Tonawanda Creek, and the east branch of the Niagara River as it went around Grand Island. When it did a series of short blasts, it was kind of eerie.

I miss those days, and I miss those sounds. And thinking about summers near the Big Water makes me homesick. I feel so landlocked here in Dayton. Yes, I have the Great Miami River, but it's nowhere as great as the mighty Niagara!
