FilKONtario 13....

This past weekend, I went to FilKONtario 13! This annual convention, in the Toronto metro area, is for filkers -- fans of science fiction and/or fantasy who are also amateur to semi-professional musicians and songwriters. Many filkers write original songs to reflect a particular science fiction genre, or parodies of existing songs to reflect the same genre, or just humorous songs.
For now, I'll post the convention highlights. A more detailed report -- and pictures -- will be reported later.
With a rented Chevy Blazer, we left Wednesday night and stayed in a hotel in Toledo. It's easier and less stressful if we break up the travel into two days.
On Thursday, we crossed the border at the Detroit/Windsor tunnel, and nearly got turned away by the border guard because we didn't have our birth certificates handy. (They were in the briefcase in the back seat.) I shouldn't be angry; he was doing his job and being thorough. We got to the hotel in Missisauga on Thursday evening, and had dinner at the hotel restaurant. (They have a good buffet, and it was convenient.)
Friday, we had some time to kill, so we went to the Ontario Science Centre. We came back and had dinner at the hotel restaurant again.
Saturday, we heard some one-shots, hung out in the con suite, and went out to dinner. Our original destination -- Outrigger -- was closed, so we ended up at Scorpio, a fine steak & seafood reaturant down the street. We came back in time for the songwriting and the Interfilk auction -- always a highlight. I then attended Sally Childs-Helton's drumming workshop.
Sunday, we attended the Filk Hall of Fame concert, and the closing "jam" -- excuse me, "preserve". We left the convention at around 5pm, and headed to Buffalo to visit my parents. There wasn't enough available space to set up the Pack-n-Play for Maria, so we stayed at a local hotel.
Monday, we visited my parents again, and then headed for Dayton. We got home at around 11:30pm.
Granted, we didn't attend a lot of concerts and workshops. Some of that was due to either me or my wife getting "peopled out", or having to take care of our young daughter Maria, who was attending her first convention (and I understand she was one of the highlights of the convention). I didn't see any other strollers or very young children there.
LJers who were there:
zencuppa (who got her baby fix!),
ohi,
jodimuse (looking great!),
allisona,
filker0,
spiritdance,
filkergem (good to see you again),
kyttn (thanks again for taking care of Maria!),
trektone (thanks for the talk and words of wisdom!),
katyhh,
tarkrai.

Date: 2003-04-02 07:34 pm (UTC)Please give your lovely wife a hug for me too. It wasn't easy for her to let me steal your little one for a while, but it did me a world of good and I'm very grateful.
*hugs*
