This one's for all the lonely and broken-hearted people out there who want to say "Never Again!" when it comes to relationships.

I just read an article on MSN.com which talks about the best anti-love songs.

Mine wasn't listed. :-(

It's Robin Trower's "Won't Even Think About You", from his Passion album. (Lyrics here.) This one lets the venom spew and flow. I rate this 5 black roses.

So. What are your favorite post-breakup and/or anti-love longs?

Good Morning Heartache by Billie Holiday

Good morning heartache
You old gloomy sight
Good morning heartache
Thought we said goodbye last night
I turned and tossed until it seems you heve gone
But here you are with the dawn
Wish I forget you, but you're here to stay
It seems I met you
When my love went away
Now everyday I stop I'm saying to you
Good morning heartache what's new

Stop haunting me now
Can't shake you nohow
Just leave me alone
I've got those Monday blues
Straight to Sunday blues
Good morning heartache
Here we go again
Good morning heartache
You're the one
Who knows me well
Might as well get use to you hanging around
Good morning heartache
Sit down

I always look forward to seeing which female student picks BH "out of a hat" for her Music Appreciation project. Without fail, BH changes that student every time because of her tragic life story and her powerful, unforgettable voice.

Everclear, Now That It's Over
Fleetwood Mac, Hard Feelings
Adam Selzer, Happy Goddamn Valentine's Day
The Murmers, You Suck
The Cure, Pictures of You
The Carpenters, Goodbye to Love
Elaine Page & Barbara Dickson, I Know Him So Well

(I had a list I had prepared at one time for a mix-CD i was going to make, but I never got around to it. And I've lost the list and there's soem songs on the tip of my brain I'd have wanted to include.)

Which in turn reminds me of Sugar's brillian't If I Can't Change Your Mind:

o/~ How can I explain away something that I haven't done
And if you can't trust me now, you'll never trust in anyone
With all the crazy doubts you have, I love you even still
But if I can't change your mind then no one will. o/~

I agree with the article on You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette.

I also have always like Harden my Heart by Quarterflash, and Goodbye to You by Scandal.

Oooooh, Quarterflash. That was a great band.

And I agreed with You Oughtta Know also. I didn't list it because they already had. :)

Lover's Cross, Jim Croce

Ahhh yes, excellent one!

Most of the ones I thought of were, for some unconscious reason, defiant ones, but this song is just a great example of letting go, acknowledging the sorrow, and moving on.

Actually, I prefer Croce's "Next Time, This Time".

Alanis is my musical goddess

Yes, nearly 12 years later, the tirade that was Alanis Morrisette's first US single, "You Oughtta Know" is still my favourite anti-love song.

"And the joke that you made in the bed, that was me
and I'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes
And you knew it.

And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it. Oh, can you feel it."

That bridge just sums it up all the rage and anger that a break-up can raise.

On a more melancholy note, a song from the same era by Faith Hill called "It Matters to Me" sums how a relationship of mine ended.

Doug H.

Two actually

Here's A Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)
Travis Tritt

You say you were wrong to ever leave me alone
Now you're sorry, you're lonesome and scared
And you say you'd be happy if I you could just come back home
Well, here's a quarter, call someone who cares

Call someone who'll listen, or might give a damn
Maybe one of your sorted affairs
But don't you come 'round here handin' me none of your lies
Here's a quarter, call someone who cares

Girl, I thought what we had could never turn bad
So your leavin' caught me unaware
But the fact is you've run...girl, that can't be undone
So here's a quarter, call someone who cares

Call someone who'll listen, or might give a damn
Maybe one of your sorted affairs
But don't you come 'round here handin' me none of your lies
Here's a quarter, call someone who cares

Yeah, here's a quarter, call someone who cares

Kissing You Goodbye

Oh, at first it was like heaven in your heart and in your arms
And paradise discovered in the sweetness of your charms
Yes, and every day a miracle to awake and be with you
And every night in your embrace another dream come true

But castles sometimes crumble some rivers still run dry
And fairy tales are witches tales when the truth becomes a lie
And a pocket full of promises won't buy a diamond ring
And every word you said to me just didn't mean a thing

It's over now, you've gone too far I can't take anymore
Be careful now don't hurt yourself when you walk through that door
I can hardly stand to look at you it makes me want to cry
Get your tongue out of my mouth because I'm kissing you goodbye!

Now I suppose I'll never know why things turned out this way
And why the one you love the most is the one you drove away?
Yes, and I suppose I'll never, ever really understand
How I could think that you'd make me a happy married man

So now I sit and contemplate the reason for it all
The climb to heights of ecstasy the failure and the fall
If a broken heart is purposeful it's in the lesson learned
No matter what the reason is it hurts when you get burned

Now I don't care, I don't think I'll ever love again
"Kemosabe" used to me good and trusted friend
But now it stands for therapy and all the tears I cry
Get your tongue out of my mouth 'Cause I'm kissing you goodbye
Bye, Bye, goodbye
Get your tongue out of my mouth cause I'm kissing you goodbye

Just for Fun

Gee, Eric Coleman makes the list at #23, but Nate Bucklin's "I Can't Get Over You (So Why Don't You Get Under Me)" is nowhere to be seen.

Rod Stewart "I don't want to talk about it".
The Beatles "Helter Skelter"
The Stones "Gimme Shelter"
Linda Ronstadt "I know I'm gonna love you" or whatever it's called.

I tend to go old school for heartbreak.

Oh and of course for the especially codependent:

Bonnie Rait "I can't make you love me"
Tracy Chapman "Fast Car".

And just about all of Elvis Costello "Blood and Chocolate" which is the best serious depression/agitated hypomania CD ever produced IMO. But for heartbreak specifically "Next Time Round".

Okay I shared this last one laughing out loud...it's intended to be taken that way 'cause no ex is worth wrist slitting, etc.

Genesis, "More Fool Me"
Tom Petty, "Don't Come Around Here no More"
Moxy Fruvous, "No No Raja"

There are more, just not coming to the surface of this sleep-fogged brain

Evanescence - My Immortal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOTglWNPPJo (if you want to see the video)

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

You used to captivate me
By your resonating life
Now I'm bound by the life you've left behind
Your face it haunts
My once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away
All the sanity in me

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along

Heh... I found myself running sound for Mother Grove on Valentine's Day at Dublin Pub a few years ago, and I was _so_ sick of the VDay hype by then that I made a special iPod mix to play during the set breaks. I called it the Anti-Valentine's Day playlist and it included things like Christine Lavin's "I Want to be Lonely Again", REM's "Everybody Hurts", Garbage's "Not My Idea" (This is not my idea of a good time... this is not my idea of a good time...), Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" and Great Big Sea's "How Did We Get From Saying I Love You".
