Last night, I picked up a copy of TurboTax Deluxe 2006 so that I can start on my taxes. I tried to install it this morning. It told me that it won't install under Windows 98, that I need Windows 2000 or XP. The reason? Because Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 98 last summer.

So I can do one of three things: 1) Do my taxes online at turbotax.com. 2) Get a full refund of my purchase. 3) Bite the bullet and upgrade to XP.

Option 1 is scary. I'd rather not store or transmit my personal tax information on a site I have no control over, even if it's a secure transaction. Plus I don't know if I can stop and resume at a later time. Option 2 means I'll have to either switch to H&R Block TexCut or do eveything by hand this year. Option 3 means I have to spend more money, and worry if my existing apps (and computer) will work under XP.

So I went trolling at the office supply stores in search of a Windows XP upgrade version. After striking out at OfficeMax and Office Depot, I found a copy (with Service Pack 2) at Staples.

I plan to an incremental backup of C:\ this evening and then upgrade to XP. Wish me luck.

FWIW, you can stop and resume later at turbotax.com. I've used them for the last 4 years, and not had any complaints.

That fails to address you other concern about them, though.
