Adventures with Windows XP.....

So, after about three weeks of using Windows XP Home w/SP2 on orac (my Athlon 600 desktop system), here's what I've noticed:
- The system boots a LOT faster
- The system runs a little faster
- I'm getting very few drop-carrier events when I'm online -- this is a noticeable improvement
On the down side, my C drive (my partition for system data and apps) is nearly full. Either I need to make more room using a newer version of Partition Magic than the one I currently have, or I need to get rid of some files. But not without performing an incremental backup.
Also, I had some issues with my home network. Before the upgrade, orac and tardis (my Dell Latitude laptop) were networked together. After installing XP on orac, I lost that capablity. tardis could see orac, but orac couldn't see tardis. After about two night's searching the Microsoft knowledge base, asking my techies in what used to be the local DECUS LUG, and futzing around with network configuration settings, I finally got it to work. First, I had to switch my network protocol from NetBEUI (no longer supported in XP) to TCP/IP. Next, I had to assign my machines individual IP addresses in the private network range (192.168.x.x). Finally (and this was the kicker), I needed to enable file and print sharing for Microsoft networks using the TCP/IP protocol. It's working! I can shuttle files back and forth without having to resort to flash-memory drives.
[Updated 23:54] And I can't find a copy of Backup anywhere on the CD or my system. I realize it was licensed software for Win98. How do I back up now?
I'd like to wait another week before I remove the Windows 98 backup and rollback files. But I may not have that option.
