This month, another movie that appears to be filmed in my home town of Buffalo, NY will hit the screens. Bruce Almighty stars Jim Carrey as a TV news reporter who gets to play God.....literally. Jennifer Aniston plays his girlfriend.

You've seen the reviews, and maybe the trailer. I love the shot where's he's walking on water....in the middle of Lake Erie, and Buffalo City Hall is in the background. They also use the Snap! song "The Power" in the soundtrack. (How many movies has it been in now? I rememebr hearing it in "The Fisher King" back in 1990.)

I'll probably go see it by myself when it comes out. My wife will stay home; she can't stand Jim Carrey.

So....what other movies were partially filmed in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area? If my memory serves me correctly......

  • Hide In Plain Sight (1980) -- starred James Caan and was based on actual events
  • Best Friends (1982?) -- starred Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn
  • The Natural (1985) -- starred Robert Redford as a baseball player. It was filmed in the now-demolished War Memorial Stadium. (I just love the ending!)
  • Canadian Bacon (1995) -- starred Alan Alda, John Candy, Rhea Perlman, and Dan Aykroyd. In an effort to boost sagging popularity polls, the President declares war on Canada. Directed by Michael Moore.

I did a fast search on the Internet Movies Database for "filming location -- Buffalo", got 115 hits, eliminated the historical footage of the Pan American Expo and McKinley's assassination and honed it down to the following:

Being Different (1981) 5.1/10 (12 votes)
Best Friends (1982) 5.1/10 (286 votes)
Bruce Almighty (2003)
Buffalo '66 (1998) 7.2/10 (4231 votes)
Burning, The (1981) 4.3/10 (322 votes)
Canadian Bacon (1995) 5.3/10 (1802 votes)
Elvis On Tour (1972) 6.1/10 (145 votes)
Filthy McNasty (2002) (V) 9.3/10 (6 votes)
Hide in Plain Sight (1980) 6.2/10 (71 votes)
HouseSitter (1992) 5.8/10 (2011 votes)
Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt, The (1986) 6.8/10 (10 votes)
L7: The Beauty Process (1998) (V)
Last Prom, The (1988)
Manna From Heaven (2001) 5.8/10 (154 votes)
Natural, The (1984) 7.3/10 (5205 votes)
Night of the Dead (1993)
Savage Skies (1996) (TV)
Tuck Everlasting (1981) 7.0/10 (69 votes)

I left in the documentaries like "Being Different" but cut out the Wrestling extravaganzas. I did another search for "sound track -- Power" but the 145 hits included stuff like Back to the Future II which has "The Power of Love". I couldn't figure out how to hone it down quickly. I must say the list surprizes me. I never knew Tuck Everlasting was filmed entirely in WNY!

Of the movies you've listed I've only seen "Canadian Bacon". Some of the Canadian in-jokes in that movie were great. Michael Moore seems to have a great fondness for Canada (he even referenced Canada in his infamous Oscar speech :)) and I have a fondness for Michael Moore.

Can't say the same about Jim Carrey, though, local boy or not. Will probably give "Bruce Almighty" a miss. The only movie I liked Jim Carrey in was "The Truman Show" and I really did like that movie a lot.
