It's been an interesting May here in southwest Ohio. The first two weeks, it rained nearly every day. Then this past week, it was very cold -- we had a few frost advisories and set a few record low temperatures.

Meanwhile, many of the fields that I drive by on my way to and from work have been overrun by what appears to be goldenrod. These fields had corn in them last year, and I don't know if this is the year they go fallow, or if something else is going to be planted. In any event, I want to get some pictures before it's too late and the famers plow it under. They're very pretty to look at, but hell to breathe in if you have allergies (as I do).

I did some experimenting with digital recording last night. One of my goals is to create CDs of some audio tapes I have. I had a cassette tape of popular (and obscure) songs from the spring of 1984. I tried to record one of the songs using the Sound Editor that comes with Roxio Easy CD Creator. The first try, I forgot to select the line input for the recording input -- it was on the default of microphone -- and had to set the volume level to 11 in order to get a good recording level. I had the headphones off, and could still hear (and feel!) the sound. It was so loud that my wife could hear the music downstairs. Amazingly, the headphones survived. Then I remembered to set the recording input, re-set the level, and made a WAV file of a 3-minute song. My hadphones and hearing are saved...for now. The result sounds good; almost as good as the tape.

Has anyone tried Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge XP? I've been considering getting that, especially if the Roxio sound editor didn't do too well. But I can't find it in the local computer stores
