Plug of the day......
Jun. 14th, 2008 08:55 amEver wish you can download video from streaming video from sites like YouTube? Now you can. The YouTube Downloader enables users to capture streaming video and convert it to popular video formats (QuickTime, Windows Media, MPEG-4, etc.).
How it works: Downloading a video is a two-step process. First, plug in the URL to download the video, which is saved as an .flv file (not playable). Then use the utility to convert it to a playable format.
Four stars. Joe Bob sez check it out.

This is old news
Date: 2008-06-14 07:21 pm (UTC)I've been downloading YouTube videos for 3-4 years now. And it's a hell of a lot simpler than what you describe. Install Firefox, and then install an add-on called Video DownLoadHelper. It works like a charm.
The install VLC Media Player and make it your default media player for all video files, it's a hell of a lot nicer than QuickTime or Microsloth Media Player, and it works with every type of media file that I've seen that doesn't use Digital Restrictions Management. And it also has the bonus of being available for just about every Operating System in existence, including Windowz, OSX, Linux, BSD, Solaris, etc.
I have a huge collection of YouTube videos now, including some really hilarious cat stuff (hey, I like cats, what can I say). There's one beauty of a cat playing a Theremin, you should see the look on the cat's face .
Forgot one thing

Date: 2008-06-16 06:21 am (UTC)I've also used the VLC Media Player that's on my PortableApps drive, but it appears to take an eon to start up. I don't know why. Hopefully the non-PortableApps version starts up quicker.

Date: 2008-06-17 01:44 am (UTC)I've found it works as fast, and better than the Microsoft and Apple players. Actually in my opinion it works better than any other player I've tried, especially with it's ability to play just about any format.
And I love the fact that I can use it on Windows (at work), OSX (my laptop) and Ubuntu (my desktop). I use Firefox and Open Office for the same reason, the multi-platform capabilities.
