ISP gripes......
Feb. 25th, 2004 01:02 amBeen a busy day at work today. I'll keep this short.
I manage an email list for another group I used to belong to. I found out today that my ISP (Internet service provider) made another unannounced and unpublicized change to their software several weeks ago, as part of a major email system upgrade last month. They moved from ezmlm (which I've grown to tolerate after happily using majordomo) to DList (which is part of the Surgemail package).
The past few weeks, I've been trying to get a subscriber list. Last night, I had a request by the group leader to unsubscribe someone. The commands I used to use no longer work; the addresses to send the commands are no longer valid.
Did they bother to tell me about this change? No. (They didn't tell me about the change from majordomo to ezmlm two years ago when they took over the ISP I was with.) Did they post anything on their website about the list server change? No. (They posted about the email upgrade as soon as it was complete, but there's no mention of the list server.) Did they even know I had these mailing lists? I doubt it. Somehow the list became orphaned, since they said they'll have to list me as a moderator for the list. If they had done their homework, they would have seen that I was already the moderator of the list. Duh!
My question to the rest of the folks out there is this: Is it standard procedure for any ISP to make changes to their software without informing their customers in advance? Or am I fortunate enough to have an ISP that doesn't include their customers in their definition of "service"? Or are my expectations too high for them or anyone else to meet?
