I picked up my computer from the shop this evening after work. While they weren't able to recover my data, they installed a new power supply, upgraded my BIOS, installed a USB 2.0 card, and installed a new 40 Gb hard drive. (The last two items were at my request.) Total cost was about $200, including parts and labor.

The old 40 Gb drive will be sent to a data recovery service for further action. My first choice is the Data Recovery Group, which has been in the business since 1987, and has an office outside of Detroit.

The bad news: My system starts, but even with a boot disk in the floppy drive, it doesn't get past the memory check. I checked the BIOS, and the jumper settings on the hard drive, and the jumper was installed improperly. Looks like I'll be taking orac back to the shop.

The future: I've had orac for 4 years. I don't indend to upgrade it any more. I now have several hard drives sitting around -- two 4 Gb drives, 2 10 Gb drives, and (soon) a 40 Gb drive once the data is recovered. Should I get external drive enclosures for each of them, or load them into a bare-bones system that would act as a file server on a peer-to-peer network?
