A "real" vacation? What's that?
May. 12th, 2012 03:58 amA couple of months ago, I asked myself this question: "What was the last time you had a real vacation?"
What is a real vacation? Once where I don't have to worry about what's on my to-do list, my budget, keeping up on email, watching TV, or any other "distractions" of home. The times I was on unemployment, or staycations (where I stayed home and tried to catch up on home stuff), or trips to my parents, relatives, and friends in Buffalo -- they don't count as vacations.
I think the last one was 2007, when I went to Starwood.
The past few years haven't been great for me, financially. As a result, my travel budget has been zero.
Before then, what do I remember? Very few week-long vacations, but many weekend trips.
2002-05: R and I would go up to Cleveland (or Sandusky) around the 4th of July weekend to meet with friends Bill and Darleen, who came from Buffalo and "met us halfway". Also a solo trip to GaFilk.
2001: R and I went to Buffalo, but we stayed at a motel (the Microtel in Tonawanda), and did some of the touristy things in town, especially around Niagara Falls.
2000: A weekend in Nashville, Indiana, including a day trip up to Wolf Park in Battle Ground IN.
1999: Honeymoon trip with R along Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Got as far as Asheville NC before we had to come back home.
1997: Weekend trips with R to the Hocking Hills, staying at either Ravenwood Castle or Old Man's Cave Chalets. And our trip to Buffalo via Put-In-Bay and Cleveland.
1995: A trip to FilkOntario. And possibly a return trip to Put-In-Bay.
1994: Spending a few days at Put-In-Bay. I think I stayed at the Days Inn in Port Clinton. And flying out to New York City to visit with Dan and Jody.
1993: Camping with members of the USS Camelot at Hueston Woods State Park. And weekend trips to Charlotte NC and Atlanta GA.
1984: Attending SIGGRAPH in Minneapolis MN.
1982-83: Week-long excursions to Camp Northern Lights in Minden ON for canoeing and camping.
1980: A canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada.
1979: Summer camp at Camp Ti-Wa-Ya-Ee.
1978: Second family trip to Florida. And summer camp at Scouthaven (I think).
1976-77: Summer camp at Camp Scouthaven.
1975: First family trip to Florida.
