This weekend is the local Mensa chapter's annual Regional Gathering, the DAMNations RG. Since this is the 17th year for the convention, this year's theme is "NC-17: We're All Adults Here, Even The Short Ones".
And that is the biggest reason why I let my membership in Mensa lapse last year. Most of the active members in the local chapter are either single, married with no children, divorced, or empty-nesters. There's no place in the group for children under 18, or their parents. Some members with small children have tried to start events, but nothing seemed to really take off.
There are other reasons, but they are more personal in nature. I refuse to vilify anyone here by naming names. I'll just say that I don't see any need to spend my time or energy on people who can't stand me or anyone in my family, or people I can't stand.
The biggest thing I'll miss about the RG is the hospitality suite. They have plenty of Real Food there, cooked and prepared by a small army of volunteers. One of the perennial RG committee members has a special badge which reads "Hostility Chair". When she's in worker-bee mode, Don't Get In Her Way! And don't giver her any sharp objects, either. But she's also known as "She Who Feeds", so if you walk away hungry, it's your fault.
One of her specialties is chocolate-dipped goodies. A visit to
janmagic's journal reminded me of the chocolate goodies I've had at the RG. Either the items have been dipped in chocolate (way before the RG to avoid fondue-style mess), or placed in a pan and coated with chocolate -- either milk chocolate or white chocolate. Here's what I've had, to the best of my memory: nuts (peanuts, cashews, almonds), dried fruits (pineapple, cranberries, raisins, figs), pretzels, and Chex cereal.
And they're all yummylicious.
One of the things I'd love to try is chocolate-covered garlic. At first, it doesn't sound like something that would be appetizing. But I like both, and I've been intrigued with the idea since hearing "The Lamia" (from Genesis' brilliant concept double-album "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway").
A Google search on "chocolate garlic" yielded this recipe for chocolate enrobed garlic. If I'm feeling adventureous in the kitchen, I should try it out. I doubt I'll make it to the Gilroy Garlic Festival anytime soon.

"O Lamia, your flesh that remains I will take as my food"
It is the scent of garlic that lingers on my chocolate fingers.
