If I were to suddently come into money, I'd pay off my existing debts, and I'd get these 'toys' for myself:
Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 (used)
Kurzweil K2600 series (although a used/blemished K2500 would do me nicely)
Moog Liberation (used) (and here's the product literature sheet)
Minimoog Voyager (but I'm not giving up my classic Minimoog)
And some non-synth gear like....
A Chapman Stick
Simmons electronic drums (used) (I LOVE the hexagon-shaped pads; they look futuristic)
An electronic wind instrument like the Computone Lyricon, Akai EWI, or Yamaha WX5 (Joe Ellis may still play his old WX7)
A Tascam (or other brand) 4-track cassette deck (to record it all)
And oh yeah....a chance to play these instruments for you guys! It's no fun shlepping this gear around if it's not going to be used. I may need some of you to help out and have a jam session with me and my toys!
A few days ago, I listed my favorite synthesizer sounds. Well, as with any list, I always think of a few more after I release the list. So here they are.
Heart, "Magic Man". The extended instrumental section starts off with a guitar, and right in the middle, there's a great synth line. Sounds like two square waves, tuned a twelfth apart, and the "glide" (portamento?) is turned on. I love how the note glides down about two octaves before the "chorus" of the Wilson sisters, and glides back up. Near the end of the solo there's some modulation (triangle-wave?).
Gino Vannelli, any song with a string synth backdrop (e.g. "Where Am I Going", "Ugly Man"). Whereas it's a piece of cake to do this with a polyphonic synth, this was done the old-fashioned way -- with a massive amount of overdubbing and slight detuning so it sounds like a 64-piece string orchestra.
The Edgar Winter Group, "Frankenstein". There's a falling-pitch beeping noise that becomes a random-pitch noise Probably some square-wave amplitude modulation happening here. [ARP 2600]
The Cars' electronic drum sound. Great opening hooks to "My Best Friend's Girl" and "Let The Good Times Roll" (among other tunes). Then David Robinson (the drummer) kicks in, starting with an electronic drum (Synare?) either falling or rising in pitch. Square-wave.
Elton John, "Funeral For A Friend". There's a lone flute/woodwind/synth line for the first phrase, followed by a wave of synthesizer string minor chords in the second phrase. [I want to say Polymoog, but I don't know if that was out by then.]
