As we've done for the past couple of years, we stayed with our friends S and C, who live in the southwest corner of Columbus. We arrived on Friday night and stayed until Sunday evening. Most of the time was spent hanging out with them.
Sat 5/29: We didn't leave for Marcon until about 1:00pm on Saturday, and arrived about a half hour later. As we did last year and the year before, we "ghosted" -- not registering for the convention, but confining ourselves to the public areas of the convention; namely: the dealer's room and the main hallway on the second floor of the convention center. So long as we didn't set foot in convention space, security left us alone.
We first went to the dealers' room, which returned to the Regency Ballroom on the 3rd floor. I purchased two CDs from Horizon Music (the "Space Music" guy), since I skipped him last year. I also purchased a "Bill of Rights -- Void Where Prohibited By Law" T-shirt from the Libertarian Futurist Society.
Here's who I remember seeing there at the con, greeted, and/or talked to --
zencuppa, Clark W and his significant other (who I often see at filk cons but I don't believe they sing or play), Kathy G (also ghosting like us),
rms_butterfly,
mooneflowerz, Art W, Maureen O, Monica S, Steve D, Karen H, Murri B, Jeff C and his SO (the "Captain's Wench", or so her badge said). I saw
filker0 from a distance and in passing.
As always, Marcon is a great place to be people-watching, and especially girl-watching. (R's advice to me is "Look, but don't touch.") I also saw several Ghostbusters, a RoboCop, and several Stormtroopers. And lots of cleavage and leg. Woo-hoo! I had more ideas for my "Marcon Girls" song, which hasn't progressed beyond a germ of an idea until now. (The words were completed later that evening -- now to work on the music.)
In the past few years, Marcon has become more of a "party con". Since the filk area is tucked away from most of the activity, I hadn't become aware of the party-animal aspect of Marcon until a few years ago, when a friend was supposed to have a wedding, but the groom pulled a no-show, so it became a "commitment to herself" ceremony. Unfortunately, Marcon on Saturday afternoon is not a good place to spend time with people, as everyone's rushing off to either panels or concerts. About the only down time people have is around meal time, or in the evening when room parties are going on.
We didn't stay very long, as M was getting fussy and cranky. We kept her either in the stroller or the harness, so that she wouldn't get too far away from us. I tried to keep her occupied while R and C were shopping in the Dealers' Room, while Dr. Demento was signing autographs. We had a snack at around 4:00pm in the food court, and then headed home around 4:30pm.
Sun 5/30: On Sunday, we prety much stayed home. We had more Copper River salmon (this time it was baked with a glaze of olive oil, sea salt, lemon juice, and fresh dill), along with a side salad with spinach and Boston lettuce, green beans, new potatoes, and brown rice. Everything turned out wonderfully.
After dinner, we watched the first part of "The Return of the King". (Both R and C are major Tolkien fans/geeks.) We managed to miss the first wave of showers that evening. We left C and S's place after that wave had cleared. We passed a bad accident on I-70 at the South Vienna exit (Exit 66); emergency crews directed us off the interstate, but we were able to get back on right away. After we arrived home and unpacked, two more waves of severe thunderstorms swept through the area.
Found out that this year's Indy 500 got cut short due to bad weather. Unfortunately, they didn't reschedule it for the next day. I'm sure that many IRL fans who were felt robbed or gypped.
Mon 5/31: This afternoon, we bought our own copy of RotK, and then headed to a local hospital to visit two of our friends who had a baby boy on Saturday morning. She had to have an emergency C-section. But everyone's doing well now; she should be discharged tomorrow.
This evening, R watched RotK (again). I watched the second part we missed yesterday.
