Last night, my mens' group had an outing at Indian Lake (near Russell's Point, Ohio -- about 12 miles west of Bellefontaine). The family of one of the men in my group owns a condo on one of the islands.

We met at our usual meeting location in downtown Dayton, carpooled, and drove up. (It's about a 75-minute drive from Dayton to the lake.) We met our host, Tim, in the parking lot at the McDonald's next to Indian Lake. (Unique feature: On one side of the restaurant are docks and tables for boaters to pull up to and eat.) We found a local drive-thru beverage store to pick up beer and pop. Then we headed out to the condo. On the way, we drove over the dam and spillway which forms the source of the Great Miami River, and a few of the island in the lake where there are cottages and condos.

When we got to the condo, Tim's cousin Dave was there, along with his children. We gathered our dinner supplies and headed out to the pool area. But first, we had to pour our beers into cups, as the beers were in glass bottles, and glassware is prohibited in the pool area for safety reasons. The grill was lit, and I offered to be the "man of service" by cooking the burgers and brats. The food turned out wonderfully, and I recevied many compliments. I was humble and said, "Good burgers start off with good meat." Thanks to Jerry for stepping in and taking care of the grill while I had my dinner.

During dinner, we had a discussion about politics and the state of the world. It stayed civil, as there were no serious disagreements. For dessert, we had carrot cake that Stan had brought up with him. It was moist and delicious.

After dinner, Gary and Tom took a walk around the island, as Gary had committed to leave at 9:30pm, and Tom rode up with him. The rest of us -- Tim, John, Jerry, Stan, and myself -- took a ride in the family boat. Once we got onto the open water, Tim revved up the engine. The bow of the boat pitched up so high that I thought we were going to flip over. We stopped by the spillway, and we saw a great blue heron standing near the spillway. Tim continued the tour around the lake. We pulled back into port when it became too dark to see. We said our thanks and goodbyes and headed back to Dayton.

Needless to say, I had a blast there. I was near my beloved water. I was a happy crab.

I hadn't heard about Indian Lake until a few months ago. There's a marina there that offers boat safety lessons and rentals. And there are plenty of cottages there as well. It's a popular spot -- probably not as popular (or expensive) as Put-In-Bay. I'd love to go back and spend more time there -- perhaps spend a weekend with my family.
