I really hate how liberal causes implore you to "DROP WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND DO THIS NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!" My experience is that the left-wing works on people's emotions, whereas the right-wing works on people's logic.
And then there's the current reelection campaign of You-Know-Who. The GOP party machine is churning out lots of FUD -- that's fear, uncertainty, and doubt -- in their TV ads, their media spots, and their campaign letters about how bad things will get if The Other Guy (With The Good Hair) gets elected.
Example: Taxes will go up. Hello?! The neocons have been doing the untax-and-spend thing since they regained the White House, undoing the work of the late 1990s in reducing the federal deficit. If they keep this up, they could untax-and-spend this country into default. What happens then? The US Govenment can't declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Or can they?
Anyway....as some of you already know, the Senate is going to vote on the same-sex marriage amendment on Wednesday. There's not a lot of time to notify your Senator whether you support or (hopefully) not support this issue. The folks at moveon.org have set up an emergency petition (and apparently pulled a few all-nighters coding this petition drive) to be delivered before the vote. To send your letter to your senators -- and to your Congressional rep -- to indicate your dissent, go to http://www.moveon.org/unitednotdivided/ .
Send it even if your reps vote their party line, or their conscience, or have a poor voting attendance record. The amendment probably won't pass this year, but let's not take that chance. There's always next year, and the year after that, etc., etc.
(A sidenote to the folks in Massachusetts: According to Project VoteSmart, Last year, Sen. Kerry was present for about 30% of the votes cast in 2003. Is this any cause for concern? His attendance/voting percentage for previous years was much higher.)
