Trip to the Faire....

Today, my family and I did our annual trek to the Ohio Renaissance Festival, in Harveysburg. (I've gone every year since it opened in 1990.) I had previously arranged to meet up with![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
maedbh7, rms_butterfly, and fuzzyvanman there. I found out this morning that they'd be there at 11:00 am, but due to plans changing, they didn't get there until much later. We got there at 12:40 pm -- a little later than I hoped, but we met them near the gate, along with a few other filk and LJ folk. I wore some old SCA garb I had -- an off-white tunic and royal blue wrap pants, with Birkenstock sandals. I had shorts on underneath so that I would have pockets, and to cover my parts in case the wrap pants sagged.
It was fun to walk around the festival with the group, instead of walking around all alone. Once again, I coveted the Sky Chairs, but I have no place to hang them at home, either inside or outside. (maedbh7 told me about some building plans to build my own frame.) We saw the Pirate Show -- very slapstick and funny in a 15 Stooges type of way. Then we headed off in our own direction.
I sawmladysnape at the Peasant's Orchard, where members of the USS Bismarck were working. I also got my employee pass, which I'll need the days I work at the booth. The family also had our picture taken in Renaissance garb, which is rapidly becoming an annual tradition for us. R bought a nice woven cloak from Greentree Designs. I also saw braider working at her booth while chasing after The Girl, stormlight811 out and about (nice tail!), and zencuppa while R was shopping for her cloak and I was watching The Girl run around the booth.
I noticed that the cast members -- the townspeople -- were a little more interactive this year. I think that adds to the fun and magic of the place. Perhaps it was becuase I was in garb and not in street clothes.
The Girl was getting tired and cranky, so we ended up leaving at around 4:00 pm. We drove out through Wilmington and Hillsboro while she napped, stopping at Rocky Fork Lake for a few minutes of rest and relaxation (and changing into street clothes). We turned around and headed back so we could meet the gang for dinner at 6:30 pm at the Max & Erma's at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Wilmington.
Dinner was lots of fun -- the gang includedmaedbh7, rms_butterfly, fuzzyvanman, and several of our mutual friends from the local/regional filk circle -- Emily, Maureen, Phil, Annie, and BJ. braider soon showed up, as did Darryl, his two daughters (whose names I didn't catch), bastardcat, and supurrkitten. (And if I missed you, my apologies.) The Girl was geting fidgety yet again -- two-year olds do that -- so we asked for our check and left early. I wish we could have stayed longer, but she was ready to go home.

Date: 2004-08-29 08:04 pm (UTC)It's a little further than mid-Ohio (i.e. Columbus). The Faire is about halfway between Columbus and Cincinnati on I-71. The exit closest to it is Exit 45: State Route 73. If you drive like me, it's about a 6-7 hour drive from your place.
Words of warning my dad gave me: Ohio Highway Patrolmen see New York plates on cars and see dollar signs.
Speaking of Faires; I heard that the one in Sterling was up for sale on EBay. How much did it end up going for? The last time I checked, the high bid was $1.1M.
