Line noise can kill!
Sep. 16th, 2002 08:59 pmThis past weekend has been rough. I'd dial into my new ISP (the one who bought out my old ISP), and I'd have trouble staying on for more than 10 minutes at a time. I think I counted 6 drop-carrier events yesterday, and so far, I have 2 today.
This has been a chronic and ongoing problem. My old ISP said there was nothing they could do, and my phone provider won't guarantee anything over 9600 baud. And they won't come over and check my line because what's inside my house is not their responsibility, unless I give them mucho dinero. Feh. I suspect that when they built my condo, the builders used the cheapest materials they could find, which included the alleged category-1 phone lines. (For those of who not in the know, category-5 is the best.)
Does anyone have a Sniffer(tm) I can borrow? I'd very much like to know if it is line noise that's causing my modem to try to renegotiate my connection (and after three times, it gives up and drops me).
BTW, Netscape 4.7 (and 4.79) have this annoying little habit of throwing up a pop-up window to dial out if there wasn't a viable connection. Usually, I've already started my connection with Dial-Up Networking, but it hasn't finished connecting when I start Netscape. If I click on "Cancel", it drops whatever connection I already have. I'd like to be able to turn that off too.
