Now that tax time is over, I'd like to welcome you to "Ask the Bartender" night here at the Line of Death Bar & Grill.

But first, the ground rules:

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."

2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.

3. You will post the answers to the questions (and the questions themselves) on your LJ.

4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post. (or a separate post, but not too long after. Be honest here, people!)

5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Let's begin! First in line is the lovely [livejournal.com profile] sheharezaad.

What childhood experience most shaped who you are now?

My mom used to watch a lot of cooking shows. On days that I was home, I'd watch some TV with her. One of her favorite shows was The Galloping Gourmet, featuring Graham Kerr. Here was a man who was obviously good at what he did, had style, flair, and panache, and really enjoyed doing what he did. I guess hosts of cooking shows had to be a little zany in order to get the ratings in those days (late 1960s/early 1970s). Julia Child had a similar approach, on The French Chef. That's become my approach to work and life -- to be technically competent and to have fun at the same time.

Who was your mentor as a child and why?

I didn't really have a mentor back then. The closest I had were my father and my uncles, but they weren't in the same situation that I was in.

What action or actions do you most regret and why?

Some of the silly things I did in elementary school to get a cheap laugh and attention, like "Hey Jim, stick your head in the garbage can". I thought at the time that this was how I could get acceptance and love from my peers, but it was very superficial. They weren't laughing with me, they were laughing at me, and I was too naive to know the difference.

What is the wildest thing you have ever done?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I think I'm a wild and crazy guy, but what I've done in my life is relatively tame by comparison.

If you meant "wild and crazy", some of the things I did in my college fraternity qualify. I mentioned a few of them in past entries -- the punchbowl, the pledges-vs-brothers "capture-the-flag" game at the house, the road trips. I did a version of Larry Groce's "Junk Food Junkie" for my high school's version of "The Gong Show". Ialso gave a talk on the Moog synthesizer for my public speaking class' final project. Oh yeah -- I chased after raccoons with a Super Soaker at a weekend capout once.

But if you meant "getting in touch with my wild man", then I'd have to say the New Warrior Training Adventure, in the fall of 1997, in a camp near Bedford, Indiana. (Sorry. Details are classified.)

What historical figure would you most like to have dinner with?

Gad, there are so many. Ben Franklin would be quite a charming and entertaining dinner guest.

Following her is [livejournal.com profile] miari.

What brought you to your religion of choice?

It was a combination of a dissatisfaction with the religion I was born into, a desire to explore the feminine side of deity (which is sorely missing in Christianity), and dating a pagan woman. She took me to a pagan bookstore and showed me the Raymond Buckland video. But I didn't celebrate any sabbats or esbats with her.

Have you any prejudices? (you needn't say what they are if you have one [or more]; a yes or no will suffice)

Yes, I do, I'm sorry to say.

Have you ever done something you wish you could go back in time and undo?

Regret is part of being alive, as Kerr Avon said. I regret not dating some of the women I was interested in, but was too shy and nervous to ask them out on a date.

Have you ever done something you wish you could do again exactly the same way, just to do it again?

Creating the electronic music course for my high school. I developed a syllabus, obtained a sample textbook, applied for grant funding, and went before the local board of education to present the course.

My wife and I also organized our wedding back in '99. We wrote the ceremony, the vows, selected the menu, suggested music to the DJ, and invited several groups of friends. We did this ourselves, without any "help" from the parents. Several of our guests said this was the most fun they had at a wedding.

For lack of imagination on my part... what is your favourite movie and why?

My favorite changes from day to day, but my top 5 favorites are Ladyhawke, Beauty and the Beast, Koyaanisqatsi, Wayne's World, and Galaxy Quest. I love science fiction and humor, I have a soft spot for romatic comedies and dramas, and I am intrigued by movies which show the world we live in from a different point of view. Wayne's World was my childhood, or the happy parts of it.

[Added 4/15 13:11 EDT] And here's a set from [livejournal.com profile] filkerdave.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Gad, there are several. The three that stick out are: "Love comes to you when you're not looking for it." "Don't take things so personally, so literally, so seriously." "It's ok to love yourself; it's only narcissism at the polar extreme."

Would your younger self believe the advice?

I doubt it.

Where else in the world would you like to live?

Southern Italy or Greece. I defintely need to be close to relatively large bodies of water, and in non-densely populated areas (suburbs or rural). I'd also love to go back to Buffalo, or Rochester, but the job situation there is worse than it is here.

What's your least favourite thing at a filkcon?

Feeling like a wallflower; sitting in an open area and everyone's passing me by without acknowledging my presence.

Are there any longstanding dreams you think you'll get a chance to live out?

I've attained "consultant", "husband", and "father". Maybe when I finally get that Kurzweil K2500S (cheap), I can write (and play) more songs. And if I stick to it, maybe I can finally dig myself out from under the paper clutter.

Alrighty then. Who's next?

1) I had the honour of being in her Music Appreciation class last semester, for which we had a delayed start due to her being at WorldCon.
2) hehehehe Probably would have to say anything involving Athene/Athena as she is my chosen female archetype (Apollo is chosen male archetype)
3) Dissatisfaction with the whole "big daddy in the sky" stuff and the lack of balance chaffing my feminist soul. This prompted me into "Seeker" mode. Though I was baptised because it was expected of me, I continued seeking. Then a friend freaked me out (long story) and then suggested a book. I read it and it clicked. YES! This is ME! June 21, 1992 was when I found my path and thus, to an extent, myself.
4) Big thick juicy medium rare (on the rare side) steak, homemade lasagna, Ceasar salads (NO tomatoes, can't eat 'em raw), smooth milk chocolate, strawberries (MOST berries actually), and damn near anything prepared with love.
5) Nix the emotion called hatred and/or jealousy. Both are vile and destructive. The world would be a better place without either and/or both of them.
