My dad turns 79 today.

He doesn't have a computer, and has no plans to get one, so he's not likely to see this.

As far as I can remember, he's been on the trailing edge of technology. We didn't get a color TV until '72, and didn't get cable until '84. My parents still have rotary-dial phones. The kitchen still has its original '50s retro decor, although the oven was replaced this past year. (The built-in GE stove is turquoise with electric burners.)

I know this is not the time or place for me to discuss my father wounds, so I won't. Believe me, there are plenty of them. But he had a rough childhood. My grandfather died when my dad was 7. Because he had no other brothers (and 3 sisters), he had to become the man of the house. And what he learned, he passed on to me.

He wasn't a perfect dad -- and face it, what man is? -- but he did the best he could. Thanks, Dad.
