And they call it "cornhole".....

One of the popular summer pastimes in this part of the country is the beanbag toss. It's like horseshoes, except that beanbags are used instead of horseshoes, and wooden ramps with a hold in it serves as the "stake".


But they don't call it 'beanbag toss'. They call it 'cornhole'.

Why? Do these people know what "cornhole" means? Look it up in the Urban Dictionary...all 29 definitions.

I learned the word from the wall of the boys' room at my high school many years ago. I can still see the graffiti, in blue pen on a blue tiled wall: "K#### D### CORNHOLED HIS FATHER".

And then in 1993, came those teenage lobotomies themselves, Beavis and Butthead. On one of their Halloween episodes, Beavis stuffed his head inside the collar of his T-shirt, extended his arms like a cactus, and uttered, "I am Cornholio! I need more Rollios for my bunghole!"



So now we have a sport with a rather obscene name. Only in Southwest Ohio. Go figure.

Anyway.....some of my neighbors in the apartment complex adjoining my condo complex are apparently training for a cornhole competition or trying to turn it into a professional sport. They spend many evenings playng the game, drinking beer and smoking their ciggies. "Must be nice to have so much free time", I often think to myself. One of my condo neighbors has a harsher opinion of them.

This morning, I found that one of their carelessly discarded cigarettes from the night before started a small smoldering fire at the base of a tree. There's a hollow section at the base of the tree, and there were hot ashes. There were no flames, but if I ignored it, it might have flared up. I tried to put it out with a quart of water, but that wasn't enough. I saw one of the maintenance men unloading a refrigerator from the garage. I pointed it out to him and he apparently took care of the problem.

Stupidheads. I despise people who aren't careful with their cigarette butts.

The school-who-shall-remain-nameless I taught in for 4 years always had a HUGE sign posted on the church lawn, across the parking lot from the school building each year. "Cornhole Tournament" The first time I saw that sign, all I could think of was a bunch of really nasty porn flicks were being shown in the church that evening. It was very unbalancing. I'm still giggly around the concept of cornholing being a GAME.

I'm sure NE Ohio has its boring spots too. Ashtabula. Youngstown. Geneva. (Is it true there's a small Ren Faire in/near Geneva-on-the-Lake?)

Uhm,well. Ashtabula isn't so much boring as its a nowhere small town. And there is, in fact, a BIIIIIG ren faire at Geneva on the Lake, along with a bunch of wineries and, mysteriously, a bigass mormon temple.

Youngstown, however, looks and acts more or less like Srebernica on a bad day, without like, the guns (mostly). Devils Night is becomiong a hobby for bankrupt Trafficant Cronies.

I picked up the CD of La Sexorcisto sometime in '94 or '95. (Yep, I still remember doing the haunted house circuit of '93, and all that we listened to was side 1 of the tape until it broke. Did you ever replace it?)

I picked up Astro-Creep:2000 at Half Price Book last year. Finally listed to it yesterday.

The band's been broken up, but Rob's been doing lots of media stuff. I loved the clip of him talking about H.R. Pufnstuf on one of the VH1 specials. And I think Space Ghost interviewed him too.

Well, yeah, I've been following the band closely all this time. And yeah, I've had about 9 copies of that tape, it's a classic, with Iggy Pop doing the intro to Black Sunshine. I think Rob's doing pretty well without the band (read "Sean"). And whoever gave him full artistic control on "House of 10000 corpses" was smoking crack. He's got another movie coming out. Don't forget that the band formed in NYU's art school.
