1% for the common good.....

I made my annual "food bank run" today. I went to Aldi and picked up about $40 in canned goods. This is the time when the needs of those less fortunate than I are publicized, and when most donations to food banks are made.
- A local TV station runs a "Food For Friends" program, whereby people buy food and donate it by setting it into large fiber drums.
- A local/regional supermarket chain has a "Round Up for the Hungry" program, whereby customers can round up their purchase to the nearest dime, quarter, or dollar, and the difference goes to support local food banks.
- M's day care center is collecting cannned goods.
For the past few years, my personal goal has been to donate 1% of my net annual income to benefit food banks and those less fortunate than I.
I invite my LJ-friends and LJ readers to donate 1% of their annual net income for the common good, specifically, to benefit local food banks. If we all gave a little, there will be plenty for all.

Date: 2005-11-19 02:16 am (UTC)Ed's church (which is to say the Episcopal church where he is the music minister, not the UU church we'd go to if he wasn't) anyway, St. Stephen's has a thing where they always have a can or box of food on the altar during advent?? Until Christmas? I forget to be honest, but anyway they put it there to symbolize and remind of the hungry and they collect food to give to the food banks. Our local small grocery store always has a box to collect, all year round, and I've noticed it is always at least half full. It makes me glad to see it because it is all too easy to imagine being on the other end of that.
