Sheesh!

Yesterday, I though about getting a couple more of those flash-memory drives. They've become quite the handy gizmo. Who'd have known ten years ago that these would catch on like wildfire?

Ten years ago. Seems like such a long time, doesn't it?

Windows 95 first came out in August '95, complete with the hoopla and Mick Jagger singing "Start Me Up". Is anyone still using Windows 3.1 or earlier?

The Apple Newton was the only handheld PDA on the market. The US Robotics "Pilot" hadn't been released yet.

Netscape, Amazon, EBay. These companies were in their infancy.

What was the average PC configuration back then? 100 MHz CPU, 32 Mb of RAM, and a 1.6 Gb hard drive. I think.

Iomega might have been just rolling out its 100 Mb "Zip" drives.

Other technologies in the boneyard: Magneto-optical disks. Floptical disks. The LS-120 "SuperDisk". (Remember those? The drive was the size of a regular floppy disk drive, but it could also read and write these special disks with 120 Mb of storage capacity. But they hit the market too late, and couldn't unseat the Zip drives.)

Anyway, enough reminiscing.

I was looking for a Lexar Memory Stick, not Pro or MagicGate, 128Mb x2 (it uses a DIP switch to switch between 2 128 Mb banks). My Sony digital camera -- and my Lexar JumpDrive Trio -- uses memory sticks without the Pro, Duo, or MagicGate. dealsea.com doesn't list any. One local store out of four I looked has them in stock.

I was also looking for two Lexar JumpDrive Sport drives; one 128 Mb and one 512 Mb. One store had a 128Mb drive on clearance for just under $20. I didn't find the 512 Mb one, but I can wait for it.

I also found a SanDisk 512 Mb SD card for a reasonable price -- $40 -- and had a $10 rebate. (I love rebates.)

Media formats are often obsolete once they hit the shelves or soon after. In about a year -- or 18 months, according to Moore's Law -- a device with double the capacity will be available for the same price. And in 36 months, it is obsolete and can't be found except for surplus retailers and EBay.

Sheesh.
